While a slice of pizza, a juice box and a goodie bag have come to be expected staples by our little ones at their buddies’ birthday parties, there is no reason those calories can’t be burned with a little exercise. This is when a fitness-themed party comes into play. You can pay a company to play host or you can do it yourself. There are several options sure to speak to the birthday boy or girl’s interests:
Have a ball– The Rockville Sports Plex in Rockville, Md. offers party rooms and court time for your child’s guests to play a game of flag football, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, kickball, dodgeball, and/or wiffleball.
Boot camp– Transform your backyard, basement, neighborhood park or community party room into a military-inspired obstacle course. Clad in camouflage, the kids can warm up with jumping jacks and push-ups, play games of tug o’ war, Capture the Flag and top off the party with a water balloon grenade launch. Parachute toss, anyone?
Dance parties– Break out the tutus at Ballet Petite of the Greater Washington, D.C. area or the Maryland Youth Ballet in Silver Spring, Md. which offer party packages. Romp n’ Roll of Germantown, Md. combines gym exercises, art and music for party goers. A dance theme is a great do-it-yourself endeavor. Younger kids love games of Freeze Dance. For the older set, maybe turn your living room into the set of “Dancing With the Stars” or “So You Think You Can Dance” and organize a dance competition.
The Great Outdoors– Take advantage of the peak fall foliage and plan a hike around the neighborhood or have your guests bring their bikes, decorate them and have a birthday bike parade around your cul-de-sac. Area parks such as Hadley Park in Potomac, Md. and Adventure Playground in Germantown, Md. have loops that circle the park (for the possible parade) and are great places to run, climb, play and party. Older kids and their friends might like to try their legs at paddle boating the waters of the RIO Entertainment Center in Gaithersburg, Md.
Hit the Gym – My Gym, The Little Gym and Funfit franchises have facilities throughout the area specializing in getting your guests to move plus they tend to have packages that will appeal to a range of ages.
Jump around– The birthday girl or boy and pals will finally feel free to really bounce off the walls at Freestate Gymnastics and moonbounce houses such as Bounce U and Pump it Up in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area.
Remember goodie bags don’t necessarily have to come in the sugar variety. In keeping with the fitness theme, try filling your guest’s parting gift with a fun water bottle, jump rope, pedometer to track one’s daily walking steps and snacks like raisins, pretzels and baggies of colorful fruits and vegetables.
Your fitness-themed party is sure to be a hit with the parents especially when the kids sleep hard after the event.
