At the center of some of the various scandals swirling around the Obama Administration is a common thread that links them all–political favors are delivered to Obama supporters with taxpayers’ money. The latest scandal involving the bailout of the Wilmer Hale Law Firm in Boston depicts more of the ‘crony capitalism’ that characterizes the manner in which the Administration does business.
Wilmer Hale is set to receive $214 million dollars from the taxpayers to cover its losses stemming from a case in which the law firm failed to comply with the statute of limitations. The error meant that Wilmer Hale lost the case and was liable for the 214 million. Large law firms carry malpractice insurance, and thus, the money would actually come from the company that insures Wilmer Hale against ‘errors and omissions.’
But the Obama Administration, working in tandem with Democrats who control the U.S. Senate and a few liberal, establishment Republicans in the House, passed an amendment to a bill concerning U.S. Patents that would reimburse Wilmer Hale and its insurer for their losses.
However, the story goes much deeper than that.
In 2009 Obama appointed David Ogden to work under Eric Holder at the Department of Justice as Deputy Attorney-General. Prior to his appointment, Ogden worked as an attorney at Wilmer Hale in Boston.
And after being at the DOJ for less than a year, Ogden decided to resign from his post and return to Wilmer Hale as co-chair of the firm’s government and regulatory litigation group.
Ogden’s connections with Left-leaning politicians run deep and wide. During the Clinton Administration he worked under Janet Reno at DOJ, serving as her chief of staff and head of the Civil Division. He also served as co-chair of the Obama transition team at DOJ and is close friends with an Obama crony from Harvard Law School, Thomas J. Perrelli, who raised over $500,000 dollars for Obama’s Presidential campaign–and who serves as Associate Attorney-General of the U.S.
Further, during the time that Ogden worked at DOJ he was part of an ATF ‘summit’ on gun trafficking that took place in New Mexico in 2009. Attendees at the summit included the central figures implicated in the ‘Project Gunwalker’ scandal, also known as ‘Operation Fast and Furious’–Phoenix ATF Field Division head Bill Newell, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson, and Assistant Attorney-General Lenny Breuer.
It was at this very meeting that a legitimate sting operation known as ‘Project Gunrunner’ became an illegal operation designed to manufacture phony statistics concerning U.S. guns in Mexico–Project GunWALKER.
Reporter Mike Vanderboegh uncovered the facts behind the meeting, and with the guidance of a government insider–a whistleblower–put the pieces of the puzzle together that showed beyond all doubt that the meeting was designed to launch an illegal operation, all with the knowledge and approval of Attorney-General Eric Holder.
Thus, the bailout of the law firm Wilmer Hale depicts the payoff of being well-connected with key officials in the Obama Administration. Throw all of your support and loyalty to Obama, and you will receive a handsome payoff, a bounty courtesy of the U.S. taxpayers.
