Porter County Paranormal was founded in 2007 by Amy Ortiz and co-founded by Tricia Marlow. The purpose in starting this group was to find out more about the paranormal world. This has been of interest to them both. Since the start of the team it has snowballed and they have found others that are interested in the paranormal as well. They like to explore the science of the paranormal and look for trends in evidence they find. They also love to have fun, this is a great way for people to get together and go explore the unknown.
PCP has anywhere from 7-15 members. They are located in Porter County. They have members in Portage, IN, Crown Point, IN, and Chesterton, IN. They do travel for investigations up to about an hour, but with some notice they can travel further. PCP is always looking for new members. They only require that you have an open mind and a flashlight!
When investigating they do follow a set of guidelines. They just ask that the entire team be respectful of the location and its residents. When setting up for investigations they have rules for that as well. When setting up for a private home they will meet with the clients, then do a short team briefing. When this is finished they will set up cameras in the “hot spots” (areas where the paranormal sightings and/or activity has been reported by the client). When this is complete they do a base line reading. They will take an EMF detector and get base readings in all of the rooms and areas they will be investigating. It is sasid that when a spirit is trying to comunocate they use electromagnetic fields. They will get a base line reading to see the norm for the area, so if it spikes it is likely to be paranormal. They will also do a temperature sweep, so if there is a sudden change, they may try to link it to paranormal. Then when everything is in place. they make sure everyone has a fresh set of batteries in the voice recorders, flashlights, and cameras because spirits are known to be battery drainers!
PCP as a group have been on numerous investigations, too many to count. They will have meetings on Wednesdays and then have an investigation somewhere after that.
PCP’s list of equipment is pretty basic. They have digital and analog recorders, digital and film cameras, camcorders, EMF detectors, laser grid, motion sensors, and a Frank’s box. “Frank’s Box will consistently scan radio waves, and is said this allows spirits to communicate over the wave lengths. It goes pretty quick, so really need to be paying attention. They have had a couple of responses, usually yes or no, but when the stations are going that fast you can’t really make out the words, then you ask a question, and you hear plain as day, “Yes”, this still gives me chills!” says Amy. A new thing that PCP is trying is called “Era Ques”, this is bringing the spirit back to the time in which they lived. The example of this would be that PCP are big fans of Posey’s Chapel located in LaPorte, IN. There once stood a church and quite a few church members are buried there, so PCP found an old song the church members used to sing on Sundays and PCP will sing this song as well. The idea is to make the spirits feel comfortable.
I am always asking if the groups I interview if they have been to any place that has extensive paranormal history. I find it interesting to see where other groups have been and what they encounter. PCP has been to a few. Posey’s Chapel in LaPorte, IN is always a good location for things that go bump in the night. There used to be a church there. It burned down and the pastor was said to have hung himself the next day. There are stories about the KKK being said to have killed people out iin the cemetery. “This location is out in the middle of nowhere. Some really scary things have happened to us, I have been choked and scratched. There have been numerous reports of people getting touched and we have gotten some very disturbing EVP’s.” says Amy. Another place they have been is the old Valparasio Jailhouse and Museum. There have been a number of sightings there and reports of paranormal activity.
