The season premiere of Psych was a bit of a James Bond spoof as Shawn channeled Bond along with some of his cool ‘spy’ toys too (for complete recap visit here). However, this week, there were no cool toys, suits, or immunity… but there was a whole lot of comedy and a few murders thrown into the craziness that is Shawn Spencer’s life. Episode 2 of Psych’s (airs Wednesday night on USA in Colorado Springs) season 6 ‘Last Night Gus’ was perhaps the funniest episode of all time (and that is saying a lot).
The episode started off innocent enough, Shawn and Gus (along with many of the other local police including, Carlton, Woody – the ME, and dear old dad) were attending a wake of a ‘fallen’ officer at the local bar. Shawn had a chance to leave before things got hairy, as his girlfriend Juliet decided to go home early, but Gus asked him to stay and be his ‘wingman’. Like a true best friend he stayed with Gus, stood up and gave a 100% off the handle and completely incorrect speech of the deceased and called for a round of shots on the Santa Barbara Police Department.
The next thing they remember is… absolutely nothing about the night. They woke up, Shawn wearing strange sandals and a hair net with some extra bling, Gus on the floor, Woody and Carlton (who was sporting a shiner and he quickly discovered his gun appeared to be three bullets short) were curled up ‘spooning’ on the couch together. Apparently, married Woody enjoyed his time with Carlton on the couch as he spoke of it often and fondly throughout the episode. As they try to put the pieces together of the night before they are called in to review a murder… Bur Carlton’s car is gone and the blueberry has been bashed in. Here is where Gus in all his glory offers up a tantrum about his car, once he calms down they all four jump in the battered car and head to the police station.
At the station, they are asked to investigate a murder of a John Doe with three bullets to the chest. Everyone automatically assumes those bullets belonged to Carlton’s gun. They quickly discover that Shawn is wearing the dead guy’s sandals and Gus’ camera phone has pictures of the three of them hanging out with the murder victim. Oh Oh looks like the boys are in trouble. A funny scene that happened in this interaction that has no bearing on the plot but deserves mentioning is how Carlton was confronted for wearing sunglasses to the morgue by the cheif and Juliet… surprisingly, Shawn came to his rescue and said Carlton asked they all wear sunglasses to the morgue going forward to ‘honor the dead’. Perhaps this, and the secrets they had from the night before, prompted Carlton to ask for Shawn and Gus to work with him on the case (unheard of right?). When the ladies were gone, Woody asked for a pee sample from everyone… this is where he discovered they were drugged the night before.
At this point the boys start to retrace their steps from the night before. First stop, the bar where Shawn remembered a young man who seemed overly interested in two women, come to find out that was not the case at all. Through this entire investigation Carlton continues to search for his car and keys (unknown to him, and the viewers at home, it was the bar owner and his partner that stole the car – which is discovered later in the episode). From the bits and pieces that Shawn puts together they are led to a donut shop… this is where they discover the John Doe was actually a PI following a lady who was having an affair (and that Woody doesn’t have a cocaine problem – he just likes powdered sugar as he licked all the sugar off the donuts). As they continue to try and put the puzzles pieces back together the donut shop owner came out with a shot gun and accused them of killing Bobo (not the John Doe, just the big donut mascot outside). The Psych team (Shawn, Gus, Carlton and Woody) watch the survelliance video and laugh as they relive the moments before Carlton pumps three shots into the mascot. They wouldn’t let him in the car and in their intoxicated state they hit the big donut stone mascot with the car, it fell straight on top of the BlueBerry (now they knew how the car got damaged) and Carlton being the big protector cop shot it to keep it from harming him and his friends.
It was around this time Shawn’s dad woke up, in a strange hotel – that was trashed, with no pants and a donut makers hat. He called Shawn to pick him up… alone, so he rushed over with Juliet, and team. They discovered the woman they were searching for last night checked into a room at the hotel (after they learned Carlton threw a mattress into the pool). They checked out the room, and Shawn discovered a gas leak, he evacuated the room and the entire crew jumped off the balcony into the pool below just as the room blew up.
At the bar earlier Gus was assaulted on the lips by a woman who he apparently met the night before. She gave him her number and asked him to call. Throughout the episode they were texting back and forth. She chose the moment the group sat in front of the cheif to call, he answered, Cheif told him this was her time, he responded with ‘no it’s my time’ and took the call (he found his courage after almost being blown up at the hotel). He left to meet the girl at this point. Shawn continued to deduce the events that happened the night before once they discovered the second body (the woman’s husband they were following the night before). The team decided to go through the pictures from the night before. They discovered the man she was having an affair with and Shawn quickly remembered the face, the face of a man on the most wanted list… which was reason enough to kill right? That man also had a daughter, a daughter that turned out to be Gus’ girl from the night before. The same girl Gus was with at that very moment. The same girl that drugged them the night before. They rushed over to rescue Gus… who was already drugged and daddy dearest had a gun pointed to his head.
Instead of being fearful (as Gus has been known to be) he was fearless. In his intoxicated state he thought they were playing a repeat what you said game. This gave the team time to arrive and attempt to rescue him, but the scene that happened at that point would go down in the history of funniest scenes to date. Carlton and the murderer engaged in a gun battle, and Gus sat in the middle of it laughing and making odd comments. As bullets whizzed past his head Shawn tried to convince him to get down. Instead Gus grabbed a bowl of taffy and stood next to the killer. Shawn convinced him the killer was a bad guy so he used his big bowl of taffy to bash him over the head, effectively catching the killer.
This episode had me laughing from the moment it started and I didn’t stop until the final credits finished rolling. If you missed it, you missed a great episode and will want to catch it when it becomes available on USA again. If you caught the episode what did you think?
