Tomorrow night—Thursday, September 29th—No Bone, a queer lady “grunk” band, is set to debut at the Mission District venue Submission. Though the band members have been friends for years, this is their first official show and they couldn’t be more excited. “I’m really stoked to see how people react to our music,” says guitarist, Estella Barboza.
No Bone formed in February when Barboza approached Adrienne Elias (now lead singer and lead guitarist) about forming an all girl punk band. “I always wanted to be in a band but was scared,” says Elias. “Estella was persistent though and finally I said yes.” From there Barboza recruited her San Francisco City College classmate, Antigone Slavko to play bass (she also sings). The drummer, Erica ‘Sigh’ Canada, who is currently rocking the keyboard drums, crashed the party. “Erica just started showing up to our practices and ended up playing the key-drums,” says Elias.
An all girl punk band— what makes No Bone unique? Barboza thinks it’s their raunchy-in-your-face punk rock performed with a smile. “We’re trying not to laugh and mess up the song when we’re playing,” she explains. “I think very few bands, yet alone girl bands, have the to balls to play music about the topics that we do—sex, demands on going down on girls, riding bikes, creepy guys, and PMS warnings.”
Canada elaborates, “We’re women who are aware of and standing up for ourselves. I think we’re fueling the next wave of fan-f-ing-tastic girl bands,” Canada, who believes that No Bone could be the next big thing, goes on to explain exactly what “grunk”—a term coined by No Bone—means. “It’s a mix of girl punk/ grunge /rock /electro /country /triphop. A little of everything really.”
“I don’t think we’re the best at anything,” says Elias humbly. “I like playing and I like it when other people get something out of it, whatever that might be.”
The name No Bone originated with Elias’ mom who yells it at Oscar—Elias’ dachshund when he’d bring his chew toys on the couch. The saying caught on and Elias would break during practice, which takes place in Mission District apartment to scold her dog. “But its sort of double entendre,” explains Barboza. “Being an all girl band gave a whole other meaning to ‘no bone’.”
The Submission show starts at 8:15, this Thursday night. No Bone performs with Misophonic, The Infractiond, DJ Teen Beat. $5 at the door. Their music can also be found on any these sites: No Bone has a website on wix, soundcloud and Facebook. “All you have to do is look us up,” says Barboza. Canada also adds “lots of sexy people have been invited to provide both ear AND eye candy” to the show.
