As a golfer you hopefully understand the importance of practice in order to build and maintain your skills. Equally important is finding a good place to do your practice so let me introduce you to one of Augusta’s best kept secrets (so far).
Located bedhind the tree line on Bobby Jones Expressway sits a quiet, comfortable, clean and well run driving range created by P.J. Park. Mr. Park literally built or designed the range- except the buildings- himself due to his love for the game.
Imagine 26 covered hitting bays each with it’s own automatic tee system. Imported from Korea these machines basically mean no more bending down to tee up your driver, or 3 wood- ever. Not a fan of the mats? Then head over to the 5,000 square foot bermuda grass area and get some real ball to ground contact. Imagine looking out to see 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 yard markers clearly marked…plus the range is a little downhill so you can stretch out those drives. Imagine 24,000 clean, fresh, brand new Nike range balls waiting to be directed by you.
Now lets’ take a break from practice and visit the pro shop. Inside you can get a candy bar and a Coke to refresh yourself or sit down for a few minutes and watch the Golf Channel. You look down at your glove and see it’s a bit worn out and notice a large selection of new gloves from Nike, Callaway and Wilson. Right near are two tables filled with new golf balls from Nike, TaylorMade, Wilson, Bridgestone, Callaway and Top Flite. Then you see wow, what a selection of irons and drivers from the big names like Nike, Callaway, TaylorMade and Wilson and over to the right a whole section of Nike golf shoes. Next you see a nice selection of new grips and ask Mr. Park to put a new one on your driver while you go back to working on your 7 iron shots.
You walk out the door and to your left notice a rather fast and smooth looking artificial putting green and just past a short game area with bunker. Don’t get distracted yet, back to the 7 iron first. You hit a few good one’s and some not so good and remember seeing the sign “home of Augusta Golf Instruction” and know that a Hank Haney Pro (yours truly) is available should things get worse. Imagine also that you can bring your kids and even let them learn the game at the AGI Junior Golf School. Certainly better for them than hours in front of the tv or video games you think.
Time to head back and find Mr. Park has your club regripped and ready for your next visit. You grab an AGI business card to schedule a golf lesson and head out to notice it’s dark and the whole range is lit up just in case you want to stay longer!
Sounds like a pretty good place doesn’t it? The good news is you don’t have to imagine it, you can just come see for yourself at Rolling Hills Driving Range. Located behind the Holiday Inn on Gordon Highway in Augusta, it’s a secret no more!
