When you hear someone say “raw food” what do you think of? If you’re like most people you think of sushi, steak tartar of a platter or cold crudité. Definitely not the case at one of DC’s best kept gourmet culinary secrets. Elizabeth’s Gone Raw is a celebration of the freshest ingredients delivered from mother earth in their purest form. A unique fine dining experience which takes place in an exquisitely adorned downtown setting.
Founder Elizabeth Petty was propelled into the world of raw eating when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2009. After much time spent contemplating her disease and hours of research, she chose an integrative approach to medicine. She immersed herself into the extraordinary lives of those who healed themselves naturally. After a three-week inspirational stay at Hippocrates Health Institute, Petty discovered that eating raw can be healthy and delicious.
Having spent 25 years in the food industry, it seemed only natural for Petty to open a raw-vegan restaurant. Thus, the organic birth of Elizabeth’s Gone Raw. Everything from corn tamales to cashew pate to the chocolate ganache tart is dairy, gluten and meat-free. The wines are organic and biodynamic. Even the menus are made with certified eco lemon and mango fiber paper!
The customized weekly menus are created to evoke the essence of nutrient filled foods, prepared with imagination and thoughtfulness. Each dish boasts a variety of colors, textures, tastes, and scents, combining uncooked ingredients in a way that envelopes a dinner’s pallet with an intense innovative burst of flavor! A delicious new culinary experience that unlocks unique food combinations perfectly executed in the coconut cauliflower curry wrap. Not a health nut? Do not be intimidated, Executive Chef Thomas Berry and Pastry Chef Calvin Lee’s skillfully prepared dishes are sure to be fully appreciated by even the most die hard meat and potato lovers!
Service here is top notch and the staff seems to genuinely love what they do. Friendly and available but never hovering. The wait staff takes obvious pleasure in introducing the five course prefix menu along with special chef selected wine parings. Even noticing when a glass of champagne is finished before the corresponding summer melon ginger cilantro civiche. On our visit it took less than a minute before waiter extraordinaire, Sean buzzed over with an extra splash of bubbly to complete the perfect last bite sensation.
Elisabeth’s Gone Raw is exactly how dining out should be. Arriving guests are welcomed through the front door of the luxuriously appointed townhouse like friends at fabulous neighborhood dinner party. From the homemade zesty kale chips to the grapefruit sorbet, Elizabeth’s Gone Raw rivals two of raw cuisine’s greats, Grezzo in Boston and Pure Food and Wine of New York City.
