Reach Out and Read partners with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County and together strongly support the mission of ensuring that every child arrive at kindergarten ready to read and ready to succeed. The mission of Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.
Pediatricians who work with low-income families at 29 medical clinics in Palm Beach County are giving children from 6 months to 5 years a developmentally and culturally appropriate book to take home as well as the medical advise (and immunizations) they need to grow healthy at home and school. Information on the importance of reading is provided to the parents as a part of the child’s physical health requirement, reading takes on a more critical importance as children need to be read to as well as learn to read on their own.
Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading. Families served by Reach Out and Read, read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential.
Comments by Dr. Noella Clarke-Aaron, MD, Children’s CareCenter-WPB:
“Reading is a critical building block in the development of a child’s mind. Reach Out and Read introduce children at an early age to the exciting world of books with their pictures and vocabulary. This gives them an opportunity to encounter the basic skills of reading and stimulates their imagination. The joy and excitement that the gift of a book brings to a child is priceless. It is truly an investment in their future and personally rewarding for me.”
