The New Orleans Saints needed a win on Sunday against the Chicago Bears and they went out and did it in a big way with a 30-13 victory. It was a win that brought the Saints to 1-1 on the season as they head into week three for a face-off with the undefeated Houston Texans.
A few records and marks were set on Sunday though as this group of Saints has not only a lot of talent, but a good bit of longevity going for them as well.
~ Coach Sean Payton became only the second head coach in Saints history to have at least 50 victories. He is now in second place behind Jim Mora who finished his black and gold career with an overall record of 93-74.
~ With Payton picking up his 50th win, that means Drew Brees also notched his 50th win in a Saints uniform as well since they both arrived in town in 2006. He now moved ahead of Bobby Hebert as the winningest quarterback in Saints’ history.
~ Kicker John Kasay made three field goals on the day which moved him into sixth place all-time in NFL history with 438 for his career. His 53-yarder was also his 41st field goal of 50 or more yards which broke a tie with former Saints kicker Morten Andersen for second place.
~ Safety Roman Harper had sacks on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter which gives him 12 since 2006. That passes Arizona Cardinals’ Adrian Wilson for most among active safeties in the NFL.
~ WR Devery Henderson had his second 100-yard receiving game in a row which also moved him into sixth place on the Saints all-time list for receiving yards. His new total of 3,761 passed Quinn Early. His 79-yard touchdown reception helped make it three of the past four seasons in which he’s caught a scoring pass of 75 yards or more.
~ Thanks to the renovations during the offseason that added 3,000 more seats; Sunday’s game against the Bears marked the largest crowd to ever see a Saints game in the Superdome. There has not been a crowd this large to watch the Saints play since back in Tulane Stadium against Miami on November 10, 1974.
