Redbox has announced a price increase effective October 31, 2011. According to an announcement on their website, the cost of a daily rental will go from $1.00 per night to $1.20 per night. Redbox cites the rising cost of debit card fees as one of the reasons for the price increase. This is the first change Redbox’s pricing structure in eight years. The website states that the 20 cent adjustment is the result of months of research and is designed to offset their increased operating costs while still keeping rental fees as low as possible.
At this time, there will be no rise in cost for the price of renting Blu-rays or video games. Blu-ray rentals are currently $1.50 per night, and games rent for $2.00 per night.
Redbox appears to be going out of their way to ease the transition – probably trying to avoid the outrages that the recent changes in Netflix has caused to customers and stockholders. For the first month (October 31 – November 30, 2011), all rentals reserved online will remain $1.00 for the first night. Additional nights will be at the new $1.20 rate.
