Dear Etiquette Amy,
What is the best (if any) way to gently remind someone that they owe you money? For instance, you ran an errand for someone as a way to help them out, but they didn’t pay you back right then for the items you purchased and since seemed to have forgotten.
Here’s a simple tip to avoid this in the future: If you buy something for someone as a favor, do not give them the receipt until they exchange it for the money you spent. Everyone wants to see their receipt, even if it hits the shredder moments later. If time has slipped by, it is perfectly acceptable to remind them you still have their receipt.
If this is a current situation, talk to your buddy. She will be mortified that she forgot, but grateful that you mentioned it, if it was bothering you. In our heads, we build up this scenario of how awkward and horrible this kind of conversation might play out. In reality, it’s usually a minor blip that’s water under the bridge an hour later.
Blessing, Etiquette Amy
