QUOTE: A parent soon learns how little he knows when their child begins to ask in-depth questions.
To educate ourselves empowers us to empower our children. ~R. Evans, rewritten by: APW
The Georgia Government has passed a bill to reduce education funding. Below are the words used by our illustrious Governor Deal when asked by Maureen Downey of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution to write about his op-ed changes to HOPE. http://blogs.ajc.com/get-schooled-blog/2011/03/15/nathan-deal-on-hope-choice-was-between-reform-and-bankruptcy/ Below is part a of what he had to say:
“This legislation will not only provide a way for Georgia to keep our best and brightest students here in the state, but it will also provide financial assistance to students in need, ensuring that financial obstacles don’t stand in the way of a student going to college in Georgia.”
This piece of legislation effects not just one group of people, it effects all who want to further or begin their formal education. The Pre-K program is being reduced to 160 days from 180. This also, reduces teachers pay. College bound students have been forced to earn a high school 3.7 GPA, and earn a 1200 SAT or 26 ACT scores. http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/a-study-guide-to-860943.html
Therefore, rather than complain about the new legislation and all of the changes, become proactive. This means that parents must now come out of their cocoons and comfort zones and educate themselves in order to better educate their own children. It is time to focus and ensure that your child EARN a 4.0 GPA not just a 3.7 GPA. You must focus and ensure that your child EARN scores of 1200 or above and 26 or above on the SAT and ACT standardize test to enter the college of their choice.
Let’s not sit back and develop the attitude that my child with these scores can earn a scholarship from their college of choice. This is perhaps true however, please keep in mind that many other states are cutting education spending as well as the federal government has developed the RACE TO THE TOP program (this means that only certain schools will receive needed funds). http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=1214
The federal legislative cuts also effect college funds and programs.
Let’s stop criticizing the system and implement a strong focus to defeat the system!
