Tea Party favorites Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Michelle Bachmann just got smacked in the nose by Richard Muller, a prominent scientist they thought was on their side.
Perry, Cain, and Bachmann have repeatedly said that they do not believe in global warming, despite all the scientific data.
On March 15, 2008, Michelle Bachmann made the stupid statement that, “The big thing we are working on now is the global warming hoax. It’s all voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax.”
On June 14, 2011 Cain called in to the Mark Levin Show and mad the ignorant statement that, “Man-made global warming is poppycock. I don’t believe in it.”
On August 17, 2011 Rick Perry stuck his foot in his mouth when he said,
“I do believe that the issue of global warming has been politicized. I think there are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects. I think we’re seeing it almost weekly or even daily, scientists who are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change. Yes, our climates change. They’ve been changing ever since the earth was formed. But I do not buy into, that a group of scientists, who in some cases were found to be manipulating this data.”
Despite these obviously ignorant statements, some Republicans still seem to think that these three people are somehow qualified to be President of the United States.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.
According to Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post Perry, Cain, and Bachmann each got a bloody nose this week when one of their closest allies told them they were dead wrong about global warming.
Richard Muller is a professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and longtime critic of government-led climate studies, who used to appear regularly on Fox News as an expert who questioned the science behind global warming.
But not anymore.
On October 21st, Muller published an article in the The Wall Street Journal titled The Case Against Global-Warming Skepticism, which destroys the arguments used by Perry, Cain, Bachmann, and the rest of the people who still refuse to accept the scientific reality of global warming.
Muller is one of those people who will not believe anyone else’s data. He has to prove it to himself.
So Muller launched his own comprehensive study, The Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project, to set the record straight, and to address “the legitimate concerns” of skeptics who believe that global warming is exaggerated.
Last week in The Wall Street Journal, Muller wrote that the data from his own comprehensive study matched the data from the earlier studies he had criticized, and he concluded that “Global warming is real.”
“Global warming is real”
Dr. Richard Muller
Professor of Physics, University of California
Formerly a longtime critic of global warming studies
“When we began our study, we felt that skeptics had raised legitimate issues, and we didn’t know what we’d find. Our results turned out to be close to those published by prior groups. We think that means that those groups had truly been very careful in their work, despite their inability to convince some skeptics of that. They managed to avoid bias in their data selection, homogenization and other corrections.”
“Global warming is real. Perhaps our results will help cool this portion of the climate debate.”
The four scientific papers that make up the complete study are available online in pdf format on the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project website.

- Influence of Urban Heating on the Global Temperature Land Average
- Earth Atmospheric Land Surface Temperature and Station Quality in the United States
- Decadal Variations in the Global Atmospheric Land Temperatures
If you are a global warming skeptic, read it and weep. One of global warming’s harshest critics has just admitted he was wrong.
