So, a friend and I were planning to meet up halfway for sushi one night. The restaurant that I found for us to dine at that night was Big Tuna. Out of all the sushi restaurants that were in the surrounding area, Big Tuna seemed have gotten the best reviews. On our night out we arrived at Big Tuna. It could have been because it was raining, or the fact that it was dark, OR the fact that there was construction going on, but Big Tuna was hard to find. Tucked a way on a deserted area of grass, but located in a newly constructed “strip mall”, we quickly got situated once we made the correct turn.
Once inside, we were quickly greeted and seated. I have to say, the ambiance was nice, but the restaurant was sort of “skinny”. The first half of the restaurant was slim, with a set of tables with two chairs aligning one half of the wall while a long booth with a chair across from it was on the other half. The restaurant opened up a little bit more once you moved towards the back.
It took us a little bit of time to look over the menu, but we finally decided on four rolls that were either classics or something new: Philadelphia roll, King crab avocado roll, angel hair roll and the sweet heart roll (awww….right?). As we enjoyed our drinks and conversation, we munched on complimentary edamame.
We got our sushi fairly fast, but part of me wonders if it was too fast. Maybe it is just that in my sushi experience I have had some excellent sushi rolls, but these rolls were not up to par. The only one that I truly enjoyed was the Philadelphia roll, but rolling up salmon, cream cheese and avocado aren’t that hard. I would have to say the most interesting one was the Sweet Heart roll. It sounded good, but I mainly ordered it because of the name (yes, I am that kind of person). The best thing about the roll is that it was pink and two of the sushi pieces formed a heart. Other than that, I really did nothing for me. For something spicy, my friend did enjoy the angel hair roll. As for me, I am just not a huge fan of anything spicy.
Maybe we just ordered the wrong rolls, or maybe at Big Tuna, it is better to get their entrees rather than their sushi rolls. If you want to pay a lot of money for sushi that fails to impress my taste buds, Big Tuna is your place.
