Hot on the heels of The Fall Of Reach, The Flood came out in 2003, and was written by William C. Dietz, a veteran author of what might be termed ‘Franchise’ novels. Essentially, Dietz is very good at working within shared fictional universes; telling a good story without stepping on other authors’ toes.
The Flood is the installment of the ‘original’ novel trilogy which details Master Chief’s adventures during the actual storyline of Halo: Combat Evolved. While a significant portion of the book consists of actual in-game dialogue, much is original content, and executesd the task of filling in what happens between ‘missions’ that the player sees in game. Much background that is entirely skipped, or mentioned only in the rule book of Combat Evolved is detailed here.
Much like Fall Of Reach, a good portion of this book has become somewhat obsolete. The effect is less noticable here, however, as so much of the novel is directly from the game, which is still considered Halo ‘Canon.’
