I have never been much of an online chatter or PC gamer. Console gaming was my domain and I liked it that way. But these days being able to connect with so many people around the world has become important to me. Aside from gaming, video chatting and the like is the norm. So I decided I needed a headset with a microphone for my PC.
After reading the endless reviews on all manner of headsets (USB, Mic jack, Logitech, Sony, etc), I decided that I wanted a USB headset for simplicity. I also knew I wanted one that would be comfortable, otherwise I might not want to wear it, and then what would be the point. According to users, most headsets, regardless of brand, seemed to break down after very little use. This was troubling as some of the prices seemed high for such frailty. In the end after the Logitechs and Sonys were left by the wayside, I settled on the Plantronics 655 headset.
It appeared to meet all the criteria I layed out:
1.) Connect via USB
2.) Be comfortable to wear for extended periods of time
3.) Sturdy and good construction
…and of course good sound quality.
So the verdict? The audio quality while chatting online is above average or better. People I was chatting with said I sounded clear and that they could hear me very well. The setup was as easy as could be. Just plug the USB in and it installed itself in Windows.
The earpads are comfortable and I don’t think that over long periods they would be a problem. They also had the added bonus of keeping out a lot of the outside sounds from around me. Plus handy volume up/down buttons right on the side of the left of the headset.
The build of the headset feels well made, despite the overall light-weightedness of the unit.
Overall I am very pleased with my decision. Time of course will tell if they were the right choice, but I am feeling very good about them so far. A one year warranty accompanies the equipment and gives the buyer piece-of-mind.
The MSRP for this model is $29.99 from such online retailers as Newegg (where my purchase was made). This is considerably cheaper than the majority of similar models which can sell for $35-$80+. I also feel that you get a MUCH higher quality item for only $5-$10 more then you might be able to find cheaper options for.
I highly recommend this headset for those looking for basic online video or audio chatting, as well as more advanced users, who dabble in MMORPGs and other chat heavy gaming.
