From New York Times bestselling author Chris Bohjalian of The Double Bind, Skeletons at the Feast, and Midwives, comes a riveting and dramatic ghost story. This is the perfect book to read this time of year. The Night Strangers (Crown Publishers, October 4, 2011) is a very scary book, and horror and mystery fans everywhere will enjoy it.
Bohjalian’s new novel stems from two random events in his life that occurred years apart. In 1987, Bohjalian purchased an 1898 Victorian home and found that there was a door in the basement sealed shut. He recalled it being eerily reminiscent of a crypt. Twenty-two years later in January 2009, pilot Sully Sullenberger dominated the headlines after he successfully landed his crippled Airbus in the Hudson River. Bohjalian saw a novel in these events, and put them together to craft a very scary ghost story.
When pilot Chip Linton is forced to ditch his jet in Lake Champlain due to double engine failure, he and his wife Emily, along with their ten-year-old twin daughters, move to an old, spooky Victorian house in northern New Hampshire. Thirty-nine people perished on impact or drown, so Chip has to live with the grief, and learn how to deal with it. As he struggles with the aftermath of the crash, Chip soon finds himself haunted – first by the litany of what-ifs and then by the passengers and crew who died in the crash. Meanwhile, Emily is trying to figure out what the strange women in the town, who are self-proclaimed herbalists, are up to – which is not good.
This novel will leave you on the edge of your seat, and you won’t want to put it down. It’s a page-turning ghost story. The characters are mostly likeable, and some of them are even dead. I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking for a scary ghost story to read this Halloween season, this is the one for you. It will definitely keep you up at night!
