On October 1 and 2 at Perry State Park in Ozawkie, KS, competitive trail riders of all levels will gather to “Ride to the Rescue” for Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement in Sedan, KS. This is a very different event than the rescue’s annual banquet in Wichita, KS, one that gets horse and rider out on the trails to see how well they work together and how fit both partners are.
This is an NATRC sanctioned competitive trail ride with both NATRC “A” and “B” rides for Novice and CP classified riders as well as the “A” ride having an Open category for riders who may be taking on their first competitive trail ride. There is a 65-rider limit.
There are a limited number of rider spots still available. NATRC members were notified of the ride, but for those who would like to see how their horse will do on a competitive trail ride, this would be a great opportunity as there are fitness check points along the way. You do not have to be a NATRC member to join in a beautiful ride around the lake.
Volunteers are still needed for check in, check points, and other tasks to make the ride a success. Several volunteers from the Wichita area are already signed up if you’d like to car (or truck) pool.
The equestrian trails of Perry State Park at Perry Lake wind through upland forest habitat allowing many opportunities for viewing wildlife and colorful vegetation. Shoes on your horse are recommended but not required.

The Park has a daily fee and an overnight fee that will be paid at the Ranger Station as you enter the park and is not included in the ride registration. Primitive camping sites will be available with portable toilets at the camp site, showers within walking or driving distance and water for the horses will be available. There are no utility sites at the camp site.
Your camp site must be set up so your horse can be stationary and tied when in camp. Any dogs must be on a leash at all times and are not to accompany riders to meals or meetings. Perry State Park is located between Lawrence, KS and Topeka, KS on Highway 24.
