In the spirit of Halloween, I wanted to find a special topic. And what else is more special than conversing with a medium? For those not familiar with mediums, these individuals have an ability to contact those who have passed onto the other side.
As a Christian, I have been taught to dismiss mediums, fortune tellers, the supernatural and Tarot cards. Regardless of my own beliefs, I have always found it best to keep an open-mind and consider all possibilities. If not for my own personal experiences with supernatural phenomena, I would dismiss the spiritual world as something nightmares are made.
Several weeks ago, I read an article about a medium named Rose Vanden Eynden. Once I discovered that she had ties to Cincinnati and was a fellow Ohioan, I contacted her. Regardless of whether you believe in the supernatural or not, Mrs. Vanden Eynden has some valid points that may change your thinking. Not only is she a medium, she is also a minister, teacher and published author.
So tell me about yourself. Your bio says that you have been involved in the spirit world for nearly your entire life. When did you realize that you had a special gift to communicate with the deceased?
I have been interested in metaphysics since childhood. I have always sensed things about people and situations that no one else seemed to know—and this intrigued me. While in grade school, I began reading about ghosts and other phenomena, which spurred my interest in paranormal research. I wanted to be a parapsychologist when I grew up and even did a science fair project (in Catholic school!) on extrasensory perception. At 16, I was introduced to Tarot cards and became fascinated with them and other occult subjects. While reading cards for friends, I became more aware that I was picking up information from voices inside my head. I realized that much of this information came from my own spirit guides and guides around the person for whom I was reading; and these guides were trying to give more insight into the issues. In order to obtain more knowledge and provide more accurate readings, I studied mediumship communication and became a certified medium with the Indiana Association of Spiritualists at Camp Chesterfield. I would also like to stress that everyone has the capability to communicate with spirits. It comes down to how much time and energy you decide to put into pursuing that connection.
I also saw that you are an ordained pastor. Can you tell me about your faith?
I am an ordained Spiritualist minister. Spiritualism is a religion, a science, and a philosophy that believes in the veracity of after-death communication. Also, Spiritualists base their morality on the highest teachings that come from communication with the spirit world. We also believe in personal responsibility and do not believe in vicarious atonement, meaning that we don’t believe anyone else is responsible in any way for the actions or thoughts of a person. As a Spiritualist, I communicate regularly with my guides, teachers, angels, and deceased loved ones in the spirit world. I also try to live my life in a responsible and ethical manner.
What do you say to those who may doubt your abilities as a medium? Many people feel that mediums, Tarot card readers and fortune tellers are all fraudulent.
It is not my position to convince anyone of anything. It is healthy to be skeptical, and I would encourage people to keep an open mind and heart when approaching a reading. Many times, readings don’t make sense at that moment because they refer to future events and situations. And everyone has the ability to change their future by changing their course of action. I would also point out that every profession has bad apples and not just in the intuitive fields. Unfortunately, a few fraudulent mediums or psychics have captured the attention of the masses and have made everyone a suspect.
Can you tell me about ghosts? How is it possible for someone to die and still wander among the living?
Ghosts are energies that have not completed their transition to the Other Side and choose to stay attached to the physical realm, usually to a specific place. Sometimes, these energies will not accept that they are no longer in their physical body and have trouble understanding their new status as pure spirit energies. Some mediums try to help these energies by seeking them out and communicating with them so that they can complete their transition to the Other Side.
At one time in my life I didn’t believe in the supernatural until I had a personal experience with a ghost about 14 years ago. Of course I don’t mention it often because people look at me like I have an extra eyeball. So why do some people see ghosts and others don’t?
It’s been my experience in talking to people about this subject over the last 20 years that a large percentage of folks have had some type of experience with a ghost or spirit that society would label as “paranormal.” You may have seen a spirit, but other people may have smelled a deceased loved one’s perfume, or dreamed of a relative after she died, or felt the touch of a deceased friend’s hand. Most people treasure these experiences, but they don’t share them with others because they are afraid that they will be laughed at or discounted. Everyone receives spiritual messages in a different way. The key to developing your mediumship skills and potential lies in discovering the way you perceive spirits and focusing on that method.
You have a book titled, “So you want to be a Medium?” Are you saying that everyone has the potential to speak to the dead? How is that possible?
We are all intuitive beings, and mediumship is a natural extension of those abilities. Anyone with an interest in honing these skills can study mediumship and be successful at communicating with spirits. Some folks are better at it at first than others, just as some people are better at piano lessons than others when they first begin studying. But everyone can learn how to receive spiritual messages and learn techniques to hone their communication abilities. It comes down to how much time and energy a person is willing to devote to the practice.
As a Christian, I personally don’t believe in reincarnation. But I can’t help but wonder about past déjà vu moments in my life. I have dreamed that I am someone else or seem to have memories that aren’t mine. Strangely, I have feelings that I have been alive before; but I always allow my Christian beliefs to dismiss these thoughts. What are your thoughts on reincarnation?
I understand the Christian perspective on reincarnation. However, there are many scientists studying the phenomena now who bring compelling evidence that reincarnation does exist. In my book Ask A Medium, I comment extensively on this research. Having had my own past-life regressions that have helped me to heal from traumas I could not explain, I am only more convinced that reincarnation is a reality. If people choose, they can explore these resources and arrive at their own conclusions about reincarnation. Additionally, many world religions believe in reincarnation.
I once had a dream about my late grandfather. In life, he and I were close. Although he has been gone for many years, I still think about him daily. Several years ago, he came to me in a dream. In my dream, I would guess that he was probably around twenty. I only recognized him because of his voice. After describing him to other family members, my grandmother said that I had described him as a teenager. And since I have never seen pictures of my grandfather as a teenager, I could not have described him as a teenager. This has since puzzled me. So what do you think about the dead revisiting people in their dreams? Is this common?
It is very common for people to dream of deceased loved ones. Some of these dreams are what we call visitations—actual communications from a loved on the Other Side. Some are simply dreams where we are still trying to process the death of our loved one, just as we dream about circumstances at work when we are trying to sort them out in real life. Dreams that have an extremely real feel to them—where the colors are sharp, we can hear our loved one’s voice clearly, we can feel their arms around us in an embrace—these are visitations. The dream of your grandfather that you describe sounds like a visitation. Your grandfather has decided that he enjoys how he looked at a younger age and chose this appearance for his visitation with you. They can do that on the Other Side, and many times, in readings, they will also appear at a younger age.
I saw that you currently reside in Ohio. Can you tell me about your Ohio ties? Where did you go to school and where did you live as a child?
I was born and raised in the suburb of Sharonville, Ohio. I attended Mount Notre Dame High School and Wright State University in Dayton, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary drama, speech, and English education. With the exception of a year in Boston, Massachusetts, I have spent my entire life in Ohio. I spent time in Boston so that my husband could pursue his Master’s degree. I love the Cincinnati area and insisted on moving back because I missed my family and friends so much.
