SAN DIEGO, California – The Animal Protection and Rescue League kicks off its 3rd annual San Diego Veg Week from September 25th to October 2nd with a national message for everyone that “For one week this fall, you can prevent animal cruelty, improve your health, and protect the environment by exploring a vegetarian diet with the help of Animal Protection and Rescue League.”
With the backing of numerous sponsors including the Sierra Club and VegNews, the Veg Week organizers aim to supply motivation, education and recipes that allow participants to experience a vegetarian life style for one week and at the same time support not just a healthier diet, but a diet that is friendlier towards animals and the environment.
The Veg Week initiative was born in the wake of a sweeping legislation that passed in California aimed at protecting farm animals from cruelty and exploitation and has grown each year since its inception.
“In 2008,” explained Veg Week Organizer Kath Rogers “California voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to protect farm animals. It ended up being the most popular ballot initiative in California up until that point.
“In 2009,” continued Rogers “we wanted to give people an opportunity to continue to help farm animals in their own lives by exploring vegetarian eating for one week. We wanted to provide an opportunity to explore vegetarianism in a fun, non-threatening way.”
The response to Veg Week has been promising, with the number of participants growing each year from 500 in 2009 to an estimated 1300 in 2011.
Participants can sign up for free on the Veg Week website and beginning on September 25th will receive an email each day with “nutritional information, delicious recipes, and motivational advice” in order to help them stick to their pledge to go veggie for one week.
“The main goal of Veg Week” explained Kath Roger ” is to promote healthy and humane eating. We want to provide support for people who want to change their diets for the better. It’s always easier to make a change with a group, so during Veg Week you can explore veg eating with over 1200 like-minded folks.”
For those taking part in Veg Week in the San Diego area, events have been planned for each day running from September 25th to October 2nd including shopping tours, lectures and what might prove to be a crowd favorite, an ice cream social.
