Santorini (Thira) is a Greek Island that very few know about but a place that everyone should know about! Not only is this island a picturesque beauty but the history to Santorini will absolutely blow each of you away.
The history dates all the way back two million years ago when the island of Thira, was actually three islands. This island sits close to two tectonically plates. When these two plates shift volcanoes’ as well as earthquakes will happen. The eruption of the volcano on this island in 1625 BC caused Thira to become basically inhabited for over three hundred years. This singlehandedly caused the destruction to the Minoan Civilization. There are several links to this volcano having ties with the Egyptian Plague and what ultimately led to the Exodus of the Hebrew. This certain topic is what prompted this search to discover this island more thoroughly. What makes this island even more interesting is how it is associated to Atlantis. Research shows that Plato wrote about an advanced civilized island that that disappeared under the sea. At that time and place this island of Thira was advanced. With the massive eruptions that had led to volcanic ash being found as far as modern day California, anything is possible. The island is now in a crescent shape due to these eruptions. It’s also important to check out the volcano! Palea and Nea Kameni, or known as “The Volcano” by the locals are two islands caused by the latest volcanic activity. Birthdates of 2,000 years old and the other at 440 years previously make these two the newest in the Eastern Mediterranean. Not a lot of people enjoy museums at all. Truth is; the majority of you would pass up the museums for the beach any day. With the museums here in Santorni however, it might change your mind. There are numerous museums in the capital city of Fira that range from Prehistoric Thera, which will give insight to the questions you might have regarding Atlantis to the disruption of the volcano that destroyed a civilization. The Archaeological Museum offers even more information on the ancient civilizations of Greece and the island. The winery museum which is a part of the “Volcan Wines” you can catch along your way to the Kamari beach. The beaches are magnificent and the city of Oia is breathtaking! The sunsets are renowned for how amazing they are. On the island of Santornini there are several cities to venture to. Each of these cities offers accommodations, entertainment, and food that you will die for! These cities are: Fira; the capital, Oia, Firostefani, and Pyrgos.
