Food Network and Seabirds have been hinting all week about free lunch for their first 100 guests. If you follow Food Network and Seabirds on Facebook and Twitter, at 11am yesterday, you were privy to location information on where to find Seabirds. All you had to do is show up, get a ticket, and get some local, fresh and organic vegan food. Seabirds is a contestant on this season’s The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network. The grand prize is $100,000.
Stephanie Morgan’s dream started when she was working in the Financial District in NY back when the food truck craze started. She noticed that there weren’t really any healthy food trucks around. Being a vegan, it was hard to enjoy the food craze that was going on. She then moved to Sacramento and would frequent some local taco trucks where they could make her a veggie burrito or taco. There were no food trucks out there for the vegan community. She was determined to open a food truck for vegans that served fresh, organic, local-grown foods. The local growers she uses are Tanaka Farm and OC Produce in Irvine and South Coast Farm in San Juan Capistrano. Her dream became a reality when Seabirds was born in June 2010. Vegetarian food is not just for vegans anymore!
Sweet Potato Fries dusted with cinnamon saltand served with their signature Seabirds sauce. The sweet potatoes were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The cinnamon salt seasoning drew out the sweetness of the sweet potato. The dip was creamy and balanced all of the flavors. Thumbs up!
Truffled Cauliflower is charred cauliflower with white truffle oil. This is a very simple dish but so good. The cauliflower was cooked to perfection. The truffle oil added a very unique flavor and boosted the natural sweetness of the cauliflower. Thumbs up!
Beer Battered Avocado Tacos are fried avocado wedges topped with creamy cilantro-jalapeño sauce & red cabbage slaw. These were featured on Good Morning America and are da bomb!!! The avocado had a light beer-batter that was crispy and kept the inside creamy and sweet. The sauce takes the cake – creamy and just delicious! This will give you an OMG moment or two. I could envision this sauce for dipping fresh veggies too. Perfectly executed dish! Thumbs up, way up!
Truck Special Jack Tacos are sweet and spicy ginger jackfruit, onion, and cilantro. Wow! It looks like shredded pork but tastes totally different. The texture was like hearts of palm. The spicy ginger flavor was fresh and zingy with an Asian flair. The onions and cilantro balanced out the flavor. Don’t worry, you won’t miss the meat! Thumbs up!
Pineapple Fried Rice is grilled pineapple, toasted cashews, English peas, bell pepper, scallions, cilantro, and organic brown rice. It reminded me of Asian sweet and sour pork–without the pork. The flavors were tropical and the cashews added a protein component and crunchy texture. Thumbs up!
Every Wednesday, Raw Chef Raya Belna creates a raw dish to add to the menu. This week’s creation was Chocolate Orange Bites. They look like mini-cupcakes but are made with raw foods. The chocolate orange “cupcakes” were explosive with flavor. The chocolate was rich and decadent with a hint of orange liqueur. Its mind numbing! The “frosting” is made from raw food too, no dairy. It was creamy and decadent like a good butter cream. Amazing! Thumbs up, way up!
Seabirds is serving lunch every Saturday at the OC Green Market. The perfect place, right! The OC Green Market is Orange County’s first eco-friendly open air market and holistic fair. You can buy eco-friendly products, learn about solar energy, energy healing, and how your family can go green. Rana, founder of the OC Green Market, wanted to create a marketplace that focused on green products and holistic and alternative therapies, as well as, raise community awareness in an environment where you could still have fun while learning. Admission is free. Parking is $2 and reimbursed at the information booth with purchase. Rana is also looking for more vendors. Check out their website below for more information.
