I met up with Sean Tyas right after his set at Nocturnal Wonderland on Sept 24th and what a set it was. Sean had the Labyrinth Stage at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino,CA rockin’ with explosive track after explosive track; the crowd had their hands up, fists pumpin’ and feet moving the entire time.
As soon as I saw him he was full of energy and excitement, you could clearly see all over him that he knew his set was amazing, so, I guess the first question to ask him was pretty obvious.
How was your performance tonight?
ST: This is the best night I’ve had in a long time!! It was the best set I’ve had in a long time!!! Better than EDC, because at EDC I had to share it. (With Simon Patterson) Simon just came up to me and said ‘I’m nervous’ and I said ‘It’s the first time you’ve ever said that!’
So you like solo sets better?
ST: I like solo. I like doing my own shit, owning my own shit.
Sean Tyas is currently ranked #46 in the 2010 DJ Mag Top 100 DJ poll, and the DJ Mag polls for 2011 had closed on that same day.
Do you care where you’re ranked or have any predictions?
ST: I definitely care; we’d all be lying if we said we didn’t care. It’s kind of like the Academy Awards in a way, and every actor is going to say they don’t care or whatever, but, it’s nice to get nominated or at least get a nod. If I finish in the top 100, that’s just fine. But, trance has taken a back seat this year
Do you think that’ll affect the rankings?
ST: I think we are all going to drop. I hate to say it, but Armin Van Buuren’s show is the only thing that’s kept trance alive. And it’s a little bit scary to think that way, but you know what, that’s fine. Once Armin isn’t number one anymore, trance can actually come back a bit because it won’t be the cool thing anymore.
Will it make a comeback?
ST: Yeah, it’ll be the underground thing again. And that’s what trance needs to be, trance need to be underground. Once it’s mainstream, it’s all fucked up. There are too many vocals, too many mainstream remixes, and we’re all guilty of it. It’ll be better if it comes back slowly and underground.
Speaking of underground, you use to be a raver, tell me about that.
ST: Yeah, I actually use to work for the Tunnel in New York, I was a random promoter but I promoted for the guest list and to get my friends in for free. I spent many nights on the Tunnel dance floor.
So what do you think about the EDM explosion here in the US with events like Nocturnal, EDC, Ultra, and Electric Zoo?
ST: I think it’s amazing. I think number one, Las Vegas is the new Ibiza, and with Insomniac doing these crazy events, they’re eclipsing everyone else. I don’t want to say events like Global Gathering are shit, but Insomniac seriously throws the best parties in the world. Not even a question about that. The organization and the production is unbelievable. We feel really, really privileged to even set foot on stage here.
When Sean Tyas isn’t globetrotting to festivals and clubs around the world he is busy working on his show Tytanium Sessions, which is a personal favorite of mine. Tytanium Sessions airs every Monday on afterhours.fm, on Sirius XM on Sundays every other week and available on Soundcloud and podcast every Tuesday.
What goes into creating Tytanium Session?
ST:After every weekend I come back on Monday battered, and I take the best 10-12 tracks I’ve found all week. It’s hard to make a radio show every week. I took it weekly about a year ago, sometimes I regret it but sometimes not.
What the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
ST: Quit smoking
I should make a note here that Sean was actually smoking the very moment he gave me his answer.
ST: If I can actually do this, I can do anything
Wish you all the best Sean!
If a bartender named a drink after you what would it be called and what would be in it?
ST: The Lunatic! Whatever you would think would not go together would be in it.
If you had any superhero ability what would it be?
ST: See through clothes!
What do people like most and least about you?
After having a group discussion with the people around him Sean came to the following conclusion:
ST: I’m good at tweeting back! Yes, tweeting, hahaha. And I’m bad at drinking, I’m a light weight
