Where do you go to be absolutely quiet. Do you have a place? Is there a place? With technology advancing its seems that wherever we go we are subjected to sights and sounds not of our choosing. Most gas station pumps remind you to “ stop in for a refreshing drink” while you gas up your car. The check out line at the supermarket has video monitors so you can catch up on the next “hot thing” in Hollywood.
Unless we make choices to be surrounded by silence, we are hard pressed to find it in today’s society. The ubiquity of video monitors and speakers in almost all public venues makes it impossible to find peace of mind.
So where does that leave us? It leaves us making choices to avoid these places. Most gas stations are pumping ads with their gas, but not all. Find one in your community. Frequent the station that has gas without the noise. Maybe it is time to find a supermarket that isn’t worried that you have too much time to reflect.
Why is it important to make these changes? The first reason is that we all have opportunities to learn. On many occasions we are presented with lessons on how to grow and better ourselves. We are given opportunities to link to our higher self. On many occasions these lessons take time to arrive at an answer or reason.
That may make it seem arduous. But it is not. As with anything, we can imbue the lesson learning process with joy. Regardless of how we learn the lessons there is one thing that is clear; we need peace to do so. We need to be able to find a place where we can be undisturbed and quiet. When we grant ourselves this time we not only achieve a stressless moment but we also learn the lessons we were supposed to learn. In doing so do not have to have the lesson reappear, oft times in a less joyful way.
Lessons aside, we all just need time to be alone with our thoughts and ourselves. If we do not find this time to reflect, grant ourselves peace, then we are clearly not creating our life, it is being created for us. Without time to take in all the joyous energies that surround us we are at the whim of whatever energies befall us, higher and denser.
Many argue that they do not have enough hours in the day to get all the things they want to get done. They say that the luxury of fifteen minutes of time alone is not an option.
Really? There are 1440 minutes in a day. Surely everyone has the ability to have at least 15 minutes to themselves. For those who feel they do not have any available time it is clear that they do not know how to balance their lives or take advantage of resources around them.
For those with children the complaint is that they have no time on their hands for themselves. Theres is no time for reflection because they are constantly shuttling their kids to sports, recitals and school activities.
There is a simple answer to that as well. Teach your kids to be kids. Let them play baseball with their friends instead of enrolling them in structured play that emphasizes winning over recreation and enjoyment. If your children are older and you live close to school, let them walk home. You will be subtly encouraging them to find time to be alone with their thoughts as well. Don’t fill their days so full that they don’t have time to be by themselves.
We do not gain importance by running around. However, many feel that way.
“ I have to go pick up my son at school and drive him to soccer. Then I need to see about getting tires for the car. If I have time after that then I might get to the gym”
Stop doing and start being.
Find a place and a time to be alone with your thoughts. It is not a luxury, it is a necessity. But it is a necessity that brings untold calm and yes, serenity. Ignoring the need for quiet will not lead us to a fuller life. It will rob us of the time to truly reflect on all the beauty we take for granted.
With Light and Love,
