The National Football League kicked off its 2011 season this past Sunday and several former Iowa Hawkeyes had strong performances around the league.
Right now, the biggest positions impacted by former Iowa players are tight end, cornerback/safety and linebacker. Three former tight ends were in the starting lineup this weekend, while three cornerbacks and one safety made an impact. Two linebackers also were at or near the top of the tackle list for their respective teams.
Here is a look at what the former Hawkeyes did in Week 1 of the NFL season this past weekend.
This former favorite in Iowa City led the Indianapolis Colts defense in tackles with nine and also had one fumble recovery as the Colts began the season without Peyton Manning and lost 34-7.
Coming off his new big contract in Minnesota, Greenway compiled eight tackles from his linebacker position on Sunday. The Vikings also lost though, falling to San Diego, 24-17.
Chandler came out of nowhere to shine in the Buffalo Bills’ upset win over Kansas City in Arrowhead. Coming into the season, Chandler had made just one career catch and had bounced around the league to several different teams. I think he has finally found a home in Buffalo as the Texas native had five catches for 63 yards and two scores as the Bills thumped the defending AFC West champions, 41-7.
Another former defensive player in Iowa City led his team in tackles Sunday. Spievey had seven tackles for Detroit as the Lions pulled off a Week 1 upset on the road against Tampa Bay.
Dallas Clark — Four catches for 39 yards in the Colts’ loss to Houston. Kerry Collins is his QB though.
Matt Roth — One tackle and one sack for Jacksonville.
Tyler Sash — One tackle in his NFL debut for the New York Giants.
Bob Sanders — Three tackles for his new team, the San Diego Chargers.
Shonn Greene — 10 carries for 26 yards and one catch for seven yards in the Jets’ win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Brandon Myers — Got the start in Oakland on Monday night and had two catches for 10 yards.
Bradley Fletcher — Four tackles in the opener for the Rams but may miss this week’s game with an injury.
Charles Godfrey — He was just awarded a big contract as well and had three tackles for Carolina in the Panthers’ loss to Arizona.
Bryan Bulaga — Started at Right Tackle for Green Bay during the Packers’ win over the Saints on Thursday night.
Robert Gallery — Started at Right Guard for his new team in Seattle. The Seahawks though lost to San Francisco in Jim Harbaugh’s debut.
Nate Kaeding — He tore his ACL on the opening kickoff Sunday and will miss the rest of the season.
Aaron Kampman — He did not play Sunday for Jacksonville due to a knee injury. He expects to play this week though.
Tony Moeaki — He would be the starting tight end in Kansas City, but another injury has sidelined him for the 2011 season. This time, it is a knee injury.
