SF asks: Is Gadhafi dead? (photos, video)
Breaking news coming in to San Francisco from the local news station here is that officials in Libya are saying that Moammar Gadhafi has been captured. The news is also that he has possibly been killed. The incident happened during the fall of Gaddafi’s home town of Sirte on Thursday.
One San Francisco resident, Donal Witham, who had previously visited Libya as a journalist, said: “Today, Libya’s future begins. It’s time.”
As of yet, however, San Francisco residents have received no confirmation of Gadhafi’s death from the country’s most senior leaders.
According to ABC 7 News, the Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam has confirmed that Gadhafi has died and that fighters have seen his body. Shamman reports that the prime minister is likely to confirm the death shortly, although reports of Gadhafi’s death were given “before making 100 percent confirmation.”
“Our people in Sirte saw the body … Mustafa Abdul-Jalil will confirm it soon,” he reported to The Associated Press. “Revolutionaries say Gadhafi was in a convoy and that they attacked the convoy.”

According to Col. Roland Lavoie, a spokesman for NATO’s operational headquarters located in Naples, Italy, on Thursday morning the alliance’s aircraft hit two vehicles carrying pro-Gadhafi forces “which were part of a larger group maneuvering in the vicinity of Sirte.”
According to BBC reports, “Unconfirmed reports say Col Gaddafi has been killed, and AFP obtained a mobile-phone image apparently showing his face covered in blood.”
The BBC says that the soldier who captured Gaddafi said the Colonel yelled, “Don’t shoot,” but Gaddafi was shot when he tried to flee. The son of Gadhafi had previously been killed. (See that article here: Breaking: Son of Gadhafi killed (photos) )
NATO officials, however, spoke anonymously and said they could not yet confirm whether Gadhafi was killed or captured.
The delay in the confirmation is because previous reports of Gadhafi’s death, or those of his family members, have proven to be false, even when those reports were given by officials.
According to the Misrata Military Council–one of the command groups–Gadhafi was killed when an airstrike hit his fleeing convoy.
If the reports of Gadhafi’s death are true, then this means the end of Muammar Gaddafi‘s 42-year reign on Libya.
