SAN FRANCISCO—With all the thank you’s being passed from the San Francisco Giants to their fans, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if the picture perfect day was also another way for the team to express their gratitude.
Taking on the Colorado Rockies in the last game of the season, the Giants send Etic Surkamp (2-1, 5.32 ERA) to the mound to face Colorado’s Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 5.68 ERA).
Rewind to the Spring Training and these two teams appeared to be the easy picks for the postseason. 161 regular season games later, a reminder of how unpredictable the game could be appears.
Though the August slide and underwhelming September led to falling out of contention, the Giants were able to close out the season strong at home as they enter today’s game with a six-home-game winning streak.
While San Francisco has gone 46-34 at home this season, they fell under .500 with a 40-41 road record.
Making his sixth-career start, Surkamp will try to lead the Giants in a win over the Rockies. In his last start, he was charged with his first career loss in the 15-2 loss against the 2011 National League West Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. The 24-year-old lefty lasted 0.2 innings as Arizona scored six runs on three hits and four walks.
Offensively, the Giants send a mixture of veterans and youngsters to complete the sweep—presenting a chance for fans to say “goodbye” to some and “hello” to others in one game.
Trying to stop the Giants’ offense, The Rockie’s Pomeranz will be making his fourth start and appearance today. He allowed six runs on sevens hits, one walk and three strikeouts in his 2.0 innings outing against the Houston Astros on September 23. Against the Giants, however, the lefty earned a no-decision in 5.2 innings in which he allowed two runs on four hits and two walks as he struck out five.
First Pitch is scheduled for 12:4 PM.
