The first week of October marks several life-changing events for international entertainers and magicians Siegfried & Roy and October 2, 2011 will be remembered as a night of celebration and sharing a part of Siegfried & Roy.
A small birthday party (celebrated a day early since Roy’s birthday is Oct. 3) was held in Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage. Surrounded by the two newest members of the dolphin habitat, two bottlenose dolphin calves, the lush foliage of the garden, friends and invited guests, Mirage President and COO Felix Rappaport introduced the duo as Siegfried & Roy proudly walked into the crowd.
“I see so many faces and all of the memories come back,” said Siegfried to the crowd. “I am very happy.”
To thunderous applause, Siegfried continued, “Sometimes you have to look in the past, then you can appreciate the present and then see the future more clearly.”
Rappaport then proposed a toast to Roy at sunset in celebration of the entertainer’s 67th birthday.
Later, everyone moved to the Terry Fator Theater to view the first time screening in Las Vegas of the remastered film about Siegfried & Roy, “The Magic Box.” Now in 3-D and able to be viewed in comfortable glasses (instead of the old school green and red ones that could cause a headache), the film was originally released in 1999 for the Imax technology and was not shown in Las Vegas due to a conflict with Siegfried & Roy’s live show at the Mirage.
Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins narrated the movie and Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (“Forrest Gump,” “Back to the Future”) composed the musical score. “The Magic Box” which traces Siegfried and Roy’s journey from their native Germany to their show-business success in Las Vegas, is not a typical biopic but a stylized version which cuts back and forth from the present to past to explain the duo’s philosophy in many areas of their life.
After the movie, a tiger birthday cake with six real candles was rolled out, Rappaport toasted the two and the entire group sang “Happy Birthday” while Horn to blew out the candles.
From 1990 until Roy’s injury ended the show on October 3, 2003, “Siegfried & Roy At The Mirage” was considered by many as the most popular show in Las Vegas.
Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat was created at the Mirage as part of a commitment to saving and appreciating wild life with white lions, white tigers, panthers, leopards, and Bottlenose dolphins.
