For the wages of sin is death…..Romans 6:23
What is death, physical or spiritual or both? Both have been introduced to mankind by disobedience to God’s Word. We see in chapter 5 of Romans that death reigned from Adam to Moses before the Law was ever given. God warned Adam that he would surely die if he ate of the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:17: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.) Therefore actual physical death was thrust upon all of mankind to Adam and Eve and all of their offspring, every human being ever born up to the present. We inherited the inevitable fact of physical death. The whole creation now groans and travails in pain induced by the curse that was handed down following the disobedience (Original sin). (Romans 8:22: For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.)
But what about spiritual death, how does that figure into the equation? Did God send his son to save us from physical or spiritual death? Remember Romans 5:12-14: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did.. Yes, even innocent babies have died. It is now appointed unto men to die but after that the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27: And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment) God’s judgment on Adam and mankind, physical death, is now assured to all humanity, except for the generation that lives to witness the 2ndcoming of Christ. This generation will not experience death in the same way that all previous peoples have. (Matthew 24:34: Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.)They will be changed, however, from corruptible (physical) to incorruptible (Physical and Spirit?) (I Corinthians 15:51: Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,) This will occur in a moment in a twinkling of the eye. I personally hope to be part of this unprecedented transformation. Nevertheless His will not mine be done.
