It’s close enough to home, yet far enough away, to fulfill the desire for a “vacation getaway” – Terranea Resort – makes for a fun oceanfront vacation. It is built, on what was once, the site of “The Marineland of the Pacific”, on a bluff high above the Pacific Ocean with views of Catalina Island.
The Resort was opened in 2008, on the Palos Verde Peninsula, about 20 miles from Los Angeles Airport and about 100 miles from the cities and towns of Orange County, with easy access from many freeways.
The design of the resort reflects a Mediterranean style as seen in the architecture and the colorful ceramic tile flooring of the large terrace, just off the hotel lobby. Public areas feature wood-beam ceilings, stone floors, and wood panelling. In the Living room (lobby lounge) there is a Piano and a lobby bar. Hanging lanterns, flower planters, wicker furniture, and a fireplace – on the Terrace –
invites guest to stay a while and enjoy the sweeping ocean vistas.
The outdoors is a large part of any vacation – for residents of southern California – and Terranea Resort does not lack in choices of things to do. Golfers can choose to play on the “Links” a nine-hole, par-3 course at the Resort, or they can play at the Trump National Golf Club’s 18-hole course, just 3 miles south. They can also choose from among the three heated pools – which are treated with saltwater, instead of chlorine, have private cabanas, a spray fountain, and fire pits. The Resort Pool is for all resort guests, it features a 140-foot waterslide, a children’s splash area, and two whirlpools. The Cielo Point Pool is for the use of guests 18 years and older, it is built into the side of the bluff, near a secluded cove and small beach. The bluff-top Discovery Trail – which is open to the public – starts here and connects to miles of coastal trails, it is ideal for strools or more strenous hikes. The Spa Pool is for guests of the 50,000-square foot SPA,which is housed in its own complex of natural stone, wood and water. The complex includes a fitness center – set in an open air setting – with cardio equipment, weights, pilates, and daily fitness classes. The highlight of this area is the indoor/outdoor Yoga room, perched on the edge of the property it is an ideal setting for morning or afternoon stretching. With the addition of a “kid’s club” which is open on holidays and during the summer, this makes the Terranea Resort a great family vacation spot, with something for every member of the family to enjoy.
With all the activity, dining is of the utmost importance. In keeping with it’s European influence, the resort’s main Restaurant – Mar’set – has a wood-beamed ceiling and cozy fireplace. Herbs and produce are grown on the 102-acre poroperty and used in the food preparation. Nelson’s, a casual restaurant, is perched on the bluffs overlooking the ocean and a great view of nearby Point Vincente Lighthouse . It also has views of some of the coves that were used in the filming of the 1950’s TV show “Sea Hunt”.
The Resort has 20 free-standing bungalows, 50 oceanview Casitas and 32 Villas, which are privately owned but in a rental agreement program with the Resort. Each of these accommodations have a full kitchen, living room, stone bathrooms, and indoor/outdoor fireplaces. The Villas have private garages. The large rooms in the hotel have balconies, most of which have oceanviews The bathrooms have marble countertops, stone floors and deep soaking tubs.
