Rick Frishman and the unique Author 101 University Conference are coming to the Las Vegas area from October 27 through October 30.
There are lots of writer’s conferences, but Rick and I were talking about his background and why this conference is a different, “must-attend” one. By the way, there is always more to learn and I’ll be there learning along with everyone else. This will be the second time for me and I’m excited since I know the type of presentations I can expect to hear.
With a B.F.A. in acting and directing and a B.S. from Ithaca College School of Communications, Rick is a sought after lecturer on publishing and public relations and a member of PRSA and the National Speakers Association.
When you decided upon the format, you put together a very impressive variety of experts from all over the country. I can’t think of any other writing or publishing conference like this one.
You’re right. This is the only one that not only has editors, agents and publishers, but experts who teach you how to sell tons of books and how to make money in your business. The amount of expertise offered by these speakers and ability to meet them is incomparable.
Whose idea was it to feature such a stellar faculty of national speakers all in one place?
I started doing publishing conferences over ten years ago. Author 101 University has just gotten bigger and bigger each year. Visit the Author 101 University website for a list of all of the speakers and their credits. You’ll be enthralled as these top pros share their expertise, reveal the inner workings of the publishing industry, and discuss various approaches to common marketing and publishing challenges.
Last year I was amazed to learn how far some attendees traveled. Some were from as far away as Japan and Australis. So, in a sentence, why do you feel people should attend your Author 101 University?
The reason people should attend is simple: If you’re an author or publisher who wants to be successful, there’s no other place to be. For a low entrance fee you’ll get access to these presenters and the information they’ll be sharing with you.
In your opinion, what are some of the most valuable tools a writer will take with them after attending Author University 101?
The confidence to get off your butt – that “you can do it” spirit. We will give you the resources and the contacts.
I know about that! Last year’s conference inspired me enough to finally write my new book, Writers’ Tricks of the Trade: 39 Things You Need to Know About the ABCs of Writing Fiction. Otherwise, I might still just be talking about doing it.
Happy to be of help.
Let’s talk about your background, Rick. You have worked with some very high profile clients, including well known publishers and authors.
Well, I’m the founder of Planned Television Arts and I’ve been one of the leading book publicists in America for over 33 years. During that time I’ve worked with many of the top book editors, literary agents and publishers in America. Some of the publishers I’ve worked with are Simon and Schuster, Random House, Wiley, Harper Collins, Pocket Books, Penguin Putnam, and Hyperion Books.
Who are a few of the best-selling authors you have worked with?
I’ve worked with Mitch Albom, Bill Moyers, Stephen King, Caroline Kennedy, Howard Stern, President Jimmy Carter, Mark Victor Hansen, Nelson DeMille, John Grisham, Hugh Downs, Henry Kissinger, Jack Canfield, Alan Deshowitz, Arnold Palmer, and Harvey Mackay.
That’s a pretty impressive list. There isn’t a name I didn’t recognize. On top of that you’re also a publisher. The name of your company is Morgan James Publishing–no relation to me, Morgan St. James.
How about a little information about “MJ”?
Morgan James Publishing is located in New York and in 2009 “MJ” published over 180 books. We only publish nonfiction books and look for authors with a platform who believe in giving back. A portion of every book sold is given to Habitat for Humanity. http://www.morganjamespublishing.com
You practice what you preach as the saying goes, and have appeared on many shows and in other media yourself.
I’ve appeared on hundreds of radio shows and more than a dozen TV shows nationwide including OPRAH and Bloomberg TV. I’ve also been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Selling Power Magazine, New York Post and scores of publications.
And you’ve co-authored several books, as well, and have a radio show. What are the names of a few of your best sellers and how can people hear the show?
Well, some of the national best-sellers include: Guerrilla Publicity, Networking Magic, and Where’s Your Wow. Guerrilla Marketing For Writers – 2nd edition was released in January of 2010.
I co-host the radio show Taking Care of Business (www.tcbradio.com) with attorney Richard Solomon which airs every Thursday from 2:00-3:00 pm on WCWP-Radio in Long Island, New York.
