Over the past weekend Starbucks set into motion their up coming initiative for helping improve student performance in American schools.
Starbucks mission has always been strongly rooted in community responsibility. After recognizing staggering statistics, identifying lower performance in American children compared to that of multiple other countries, Starbucks decided to take action.
According to Rodney H., Starbucks Community Investments Director:
Sadly, it is not news that fewer and fewer of us in the U.S. successfully graduate. Nor is it news that America’s educational system must better address the 21st century needs of our citizens. It’s a huge task that no single entity can change. Read Rodney’s full account here: Help Us Support Education in your Community
Starbucks’ sobering look into the cause for this, re-addresses the issue of lower success rates occurring in underserved communities. According to Rodney, the most recent reports tell us that one quarter of American students do not graduate as scheduled and 40% of these are children of color.
In response, you can make your morning java count towards dollars for a public school project that is important to you. Purchase a specially-marked bag of Gold Coast Blend® – Morning Joe Edition, embellished with a $5 donation sticker to DonorsChoose.org. You will be able to direct the $5 to a public school project that inspires you.
Some ideas for Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head, and Savannah include:
- Horizon’s Extended Day Learning program – Hosted by the South Carolina Maritime Foundation. Focused on expanding students knowledge of science and biology, students learn the importance of environmental responsibility by studying marine life and resources.
- Parent University – Piloted in Savannah 13 years ago and now expanded to multiple cities across the nation, to include Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Charleston.
- Parent Teacher Association (PTA) – Everyone is at least familiar with this organization, however PTA’s nationwide are non-profit therefore, work hard fundraising to support PTA events and projects.
These are just suggestions, however any project or initiative set in place to improve education and resources for public schools can be established or located on DonorsChoose.org.
In the spirit of Whitney Houston’s greatest song:
“….the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside…”
