Brunch is one of the best parts of the weekend. You can roll out of bed at noon, head to almost any restaurant, and they’ll serve you breakfast food with no judgement. But you can only get this meal twice a week, so there’s not much time for trial and error. For satisfaction guaranteed, head to Vbar at the corner of St. Mark’s and 1st Ave.
On paper, Vbar’s menu doesn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary, but their food is really excellent. Try the Baked Eggs & Roasted Tomato ($10): poached eggs smothered in a garlicky tomato sauce with lots of creamy ricotta cheese, and sprinkled with Parmesan. It’s like having a great pasta dish without the pasta. It’s also served with two pieces of bread drizzled with olive oil, so you can sop up all the tasty sauce when you finish the eggs.
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, order the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes ($10). I’ve had this dish at other restaurants, but they’ve never been this good. These aren’t ordinary pancakes with a hint of citrus; Vbar puts the lemon flavor front and center, and it tastes delicious. The consistency of the pancakes is also wonderful, owing to the addition of ricotta in the batter. Topped with mixed berries and served with maple syrup, this dish is sure to please even the most jaded pancake eaters.
Feeling especially hungry? Add a side of Zucchini Fries ($5) to your meal. They’re a nice departure from regular French fries, cooked nicely with crispy breading that doesn’t fall off when you pick them up. The tomato sauce for dipping is also a welcome change from ketchup (not that there’s anything wrong with French fries and ketchup, but sometimes you have to class it up a bit).
For two dollars, you can add coffee and a small orange juice to the price of any egg or griddle item you order or, for five dollars, you can replace the orange juice with a Bellini, Bloody Mary, or Mimosa. The Bloody Mary is made really well, and they don’t skimp on the size because it’s part of a special. Considering the normal price of those cocktails alone is $9 a pop, this is a great brunch for a great price.
