AVENTURA – The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center kicks off educational programming with the Smart Stage Matinee Series on Monday, October 10 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. with the musical Sticks and Stones.
The performance tells the story of siblings Scott and Lyn who experience different problems with bullies, peer pressure and loss of friends. Scott is betrayed after his mother reports the names of his friends who are caught vandalizing while Lyn is called “a snitch” after a derogatory website is discovered.
Based on real life experiences of adolescents, this one-woman musical uses music, poetry and video projection to teach children about social issues and the critical effects of bullying. The show is commissioned by the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and funded by the United States Department of Justice.
Smart Stage Matinees are affordably-priced professional school-day performances where learning comes to life onstage for all students in grades Pre-K through 12. Each performance covers themes which reinforce classroom learning and directly connect with core curriculum through literature-based shows, science and math-related productions, dramatizations of historical events and immersion into the music, dance and traditions of different cultures. Free study guides for teachers and educators, which reinforce the lessons and enhance the learning experience for many of the performances, are available at BrowardCenter.org/Education or by calling (954) 468-2689.
Tickets are $10 for individual seats as well as for groups of 10 or more and $3 lap seats are available for infants 12 months and under. Tickets, group discounts and scheduling information for all performances are available through the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s box office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.AventuraCenter.org.
The show is a presentation of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a 14,864-square-foot, 326-seat waterfront complex that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is located at 3385 N.E. 188 Street in Aventura, on Twitter @AventuraCenter and on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/AventuraCenter.
