About a month ago, I somehow stumbled upon this video on You Tube about donation. It moved me to do something different in regard to the way I give. This video was created from a child’s perspective and walks through what it is like to on the wait list for a organ or tissue donation. I thought that was good enough to be an organ donor on my license. But then I did some research and it really opened my eyes to being aware of what I can do NOW.
I then registered to be a bone marrow donor and have just sent my information over to Be The Match Foundation® and the National Marrow Donor Program. That way I will hopefully make it on to the list, in case I am found to be a match for someone in need. The very next day I discovered a race that MATCHES my efforts into giving and being active. This December will ring in the 6th annual Summit for Life race.
Here is a brief calendar of events:
October 27th Kickoff Partyat 39 Degrees in Aspen
December 9th Wine and Dinefor Life at 39 Degrees- A night of fine dining at The Sky Hotel with Pacifica as the culinary inspiration for the event. This event benefits The Chris Klug Foundation which is a foundation that promotes the message and education of donation.
December 10th Summit for Life-Summit for Life has two start times: 5:00 PM for recreational start and 6:00 PM for the competitive start. As you start from the base of Aspen Mountain, you will climb 3,267 vertical feet in 2.5 miles. (Awesome) Headlights are strongly suggested and footwear is your choice. Racers can choose between snowshoes, skins or other creative gear like microspikes to walk up the mountain. Once across the summit aka finish line, there will be a dinner, refreshments and live music. Top fundraisers and racers will receive recognition and prices. Racers of all abilities are invited to compete but there is also a ride for life. Where you can ride the Silver Queen Gondola straight to the summit party. There is even a “snowed in” option, where you can still donate and be at home.
There are two big reasons I want to be there; I want to support the awareness of being a donor and give myself a personal challenge. You can be sure I will be at the competitive start time and see how fast I can summit on my snowshoes. I will feel great at the finish line regardless of my race time, it feels great to give and have a blast doing so.
As always, see you on the mountain.
