Two major things happened in the season finale of Supernatural last fall; Castiel gobbled up all the souls in purgatory and became an all powerful being, and Sam’s wall was destroyed. That meant this season was going to have to either finish or progress those storylines to appease the fans. The season finale which aired Friday night on the CW (channel 6 in Phoenix) unravelled both of these storylines, with a strong focus on Castiel and his ‘God Complex’.
Castiel went on a (in his mind) justifiable killing spree and took out many people like; politicians (who abused power), preachers (who did not act out what they preached), and motivational speakers (don’t ask). But as he used the power he had; it quickly became apparent he swallowed more than he could actually chew. Those souls wanted out and they would have gladly ripped Castiel’s body open to escape.
Sam, Dean and Bobby decided they needed to bind ‘Death’ because he was the only one alive they knew who could kill ‘God’. This irritated Death and Castiel (who death quickly told everyone was NOT God). Then Death revealed why Castiel was having difficulty controlling the souls. God created purgatory for one reason… to imprison the Leviathan (big baddies that would easily tear apart humans and angels alike).
Death gave them a window to clean up the mess. Despite the fact that Castiel disappeared, Sam and Dean were able to get him to agree to return the souls to purgatory. The problem is the Leviathan did not want to leave. Just when the brothers thought they got their friend back, they lost him again as the Leviathan moved in and took over Castiel’s body. This storyline is one that will continue to unravel, what do you think of how it has unraveled so far? Feel free to leave a comment below.
The preview to the left reveals that Sam’s story line will be taking center stage next week, but this week we saw one of the nasty side effects from the wall busting open, hallucinations. He tried to keep this from Dean, a gift of normalcy he thought but this only irritated Dean when he found out about these hallucinations from Death (who told him one wall per customer and made it clear he wasn’t going to help again). What do you think will happen with Sam’s conflict? Do you think he can overcome this one or will the evil spirit take hold? Feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts.
