Obviously, the headline question isn’t to be taken literally. We’ve heard Brandon Hantz speak, reason, and strategize on “Survivor: South Pacific,” and he seems like an intelligent and, at times, honorable guy. And as the burdened nephew who carries the heavy shadow of Russell Hantz everywhere he goes, Brandon is working hard to carve out his own niche on “Survivor.”
Story: Has Russell Hantz already made ‘Survivor: South Pacific’ stale?
He may be smart away from the “Survivor” island, but on the show, the question remains valid: Is Brandon Hantz playing a smart game?
In episode 1, we saw him attempt to get away with never taking off his shirt, for fear he’d scare off his tribemates with his “Lil’ Hantz” tattoo. On episode 2, he felt so good about his bond with Coach, he decided to show it off anyway, something that will likely buy him time in the short-term, but might ensnare him in more lies as the game progresses.
And despite being a man of God, one who loves his wife and wants to rid the “Survivor” beaches of any sexual temptation (a.k.a Mikayla), he found himself lying about Stacey and Christine, something that came back to bite him at Tribal Council.
The preview for episode 3 gets worse for baby Russell, as we see him crying over his struggle to balance playing the game with honor.
“Survivor” is a hard game, and it makes contestants do some really stupid things. And so far, I don’t think Brandon is playing a very smart game. But thanks to his alliance, he’ll probably not have to worry about being voted off anytime soon.
In Boston, “Survivor: South Pacific” aired at 8 pm eastern on CBS.
