Owners Leslie Dianda and Tony Sanfilippo invite you to mangia, bevi e ridi at their Dyer, Ind., Italian restaurant. That’s eat, drink and laugh to English speakers.
The restaurant is a pretty place with piped-in light jazz, and intimate nooks created by strategically placed tables for romantic dinners for two or for a group of your favorite paisanos. Start your culinary adventure with Antipasto Italiano Della Casa (Italian coldcuts, cheeses and olives), a Pizza Quattro Formaggi (an 8-inch four-cheese pizza), or a Sicilian Salad (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, black olives, olive oil and herbs). Soup of the day like the homemade tortellini would be a good choice, as well.
The menu is huge, so it’s wide open in the entrée area. You can go with one of the 15 pasta offerings or one of Svago’s house specials like the Chicken Marsala in a rich wine sauce with lots of mushrooms or the Sea Bass alla Trapanese lightly sautéed with cilantro, lemon pepper and rosemary with risotto, as my friend and I enjoyed recently.
But that’s just two of the offerings. You’ll find shellfish with pasta, manicotti, lasagna, duck, pork, and all the usual Italian suspects. It’s hard to imagine carrying such a huge inventory, but they manage to do it. Dishes are made to order so it might take 30 minutes for your dinner to come to the table when the restaurant is busy. Lunchtime is the perfect opportunity to try a panini or piadina (round flat bread sandwich), pizza, pasta or hearty entrée.
Don’t leave without trying dessert. The Bomboloni (owner Sanfilippo’s specialty), a fried pastry filled with special cream, and the Amaretto Cake made with ricotta and Italian custard, and covered in almonds and dusted with cocoa are my favorites.
Amenities include on-premise catering for up to 65 and off-premise catering for up to 200, wine-paired events, occasional live music, Wine of the Month Club, full bar, and friendly staff. Monday is Wine Night — 50% off the bottle of wine of choice with the purchae of two entrées, or $5 per glass with the purchase of one entrée. Tuesday is $25 Dinner for Two (beverages, tax and gratuity not included).
The restaurant might be a little hard to find for the uninitiated. It’s located across from the Dyer, Ind., U.S. post office in the strip mall at the corner of U.S. 30 and Great Lakes Road. So what are you waiting for? Go, mangia bene!
