Most homes in South Florida use electric to cook, heat water, and dry clothes. Every month we pay Florida Power & Light a hefty chunk of our money to do just that. There is a way to take FPL out of the picture and save money to. The way to do that is to switch to natural gas.
When natural gas is consumed directly by you, the consumer, from site to source, more than 90% of the energy value is used. With non-gas energy, natural gas must be burned at a power plant, converted and sent to your home or business via wire. Up to 78% of the original energy is wasted in these extra steps.
Although natural gas appliances may cost slightly more to purchase, they pay for themselves in performance. Because natural gas is more efficient, appliances use less fuel- and cost less to operate.
Beyond monthly energy savings, natural gas appliances usually boast longer life spans (up to 20 years!). Concerned with spiking energy prices? Don’t be. Despite changes in supply and demand, natural gas prices usually always remain significantly lower than oil.
To help you to get started with natural gas, the Florida Public Service Commission has approved the Energy Conservation Programs of your local gas utility. This means you may be able to cash in on the comfort and efficiency of natural gas via:
- Cash rebates
- Construction allowances
- Easement programs
- Reduced costs on new appliances and/or industrial equipment
Natural gas appliances eligible for the Energy Conservation Program include:
- Water Heaters
- Clothes Dryers
These incentives are available for both commercial and residential consumers, these incentives vary from utility to utility. Contact your local gas company for further information. If you are a residential builder, make sure to contact your local utility while in the planning stages of your development.
