‘Terra Nova’ on Fox is only three episodes in but I am a fan and definitely hooked. With that said, there are some things that I feel need to be toned down on the show and if it is picked up for a second season (please, please, please!) the writers should focus more on the mystery, the dinosaurs, the science of living in the past and of course more dinosaurs.
Episode 1.3 recap/review
After reading the countless comments on Terra Nova’s Facebook fan page, the three things that people seem to be able to agree on is that teen angst is overdone, the love triangle is really past its prime, and that there definitely needs to be more dino action.
Terra Nova is in the unique position to write itself to be a truly fantastic story that will bring all people into the show, but they have to pick a theme other than focusing solely on this being a family-oriented show.
Episode 1.4 preview/pics
Some months ago, when Terra Nova was at the trade shows and comic conventions, it seems that Fox opted to make this adventurous show into a family friendly one. The problem with that is there are too many plots that seem identical to what we’ve already seen in countless other shows when it comes to the family type show from the teenager rebelling (yawn) to the parents trying to understand why their children hate them (more yawning).
On one hand I like the idea of a family sticking together to travel back to a time where the dinosaurs roamed free, but with this plot comes the tried and true teen angst which makes me like the show 1% less than my over the top 100% love fest.
Teen angst works on the CW, ABC Family, even MTV, as seen by the shows that are currently in place on these networks. But with a show like this on Fox, Terra Nova seems to cater to an audience who are really past caring if Josh is going through growing pains and refusing to adjust. Seriously, who cares about that?
Now if it is toned down more, then Josh’s annoying ways can be forgiven, and we as an audience can move on as he was in episode three. He was actually almost likeable.
The other aspect is the love story between Jim and Elisabeth, It truly is a beautiful thing, and how she basically broke him out of jail to make sure that he would be with his family. So why would the writers think it was ok to add the element of Dr. Wallace?
Are they doing this for the female viewership because personally I resent that as a female. Love triangles are really passé and overdone to death. Honestly there is enough strife 85 million years ago, that an added little weasel (and yes that is exactly how he came off) really seems lame. Elisabeth broke her husband out of jail. Hek she even had a third child with Jim even though it was against the law.
Now the part the part that should really be expounded on are the dinosaurs. Whether the execs want to believe it or not, Terra Nova is an adventure story first and foremost. Why wouldn’t they want to expand that part of the story? After 3 episodes I am a huge fan of this show. Seriously. Yes I have some complaints, but who doesn’t when it comes to their favorite shows?
There are ten episodes left, and who knows? Maybe these issues will be addressed by episode 13.
Forgive the tirade, but Terra Nova is a real winner, that can be a dynamic force in the sci-fi world. This is a new show that is still getting its feet wet, still trying to figure out which demographic it is going after, and above all else, the show has dinosaurs. And you really can’t lose with the sci-fi future tech paired with creatures that will eat you.
Do you agree or disagree?
