The 21Club has always been one of the premiere fine dining restaurants in New York City. It was founded during an earlier era when fine dining abounded in New York City. The restaurant has changed little over the years and still offers excitement, service, and cuisine that is exceptional. Amidst all the traffic and noise of the city stands a unique townhouse building with iron gates and brass stanchions and miniature jockey statues. Upon entering the brass front doors you are transported back in time to an era of elegance and formality that is slowly disappearing from the Manhattan dining scene.
To the right of the entrance, 21 has introduced an informal new dining area “Bar 21” where you can experience the excitement and people watching without spending a great deal of money or time.
We were led to our tables by the Club Manager, who introduced us to our waiter/captain. The main dining room at 21 is like no other. It is a room with dark wood floors, a large old time bar area. The ceiling of the main dining room is covered with replicas, and corporate logos and symbols of the fabulous corporations who have dined at 21.The waiters, and bus boys are all dressed elegantly and the service is always impeccable.
Our menu for our mid afternoon meal comprised some 21 club signature dishes along with special side dishes from the halycon days of the 1980’s when we frequented the restaurant on a regular basis.
To start our meal we shared a famous 21 Caesar Salad – romaine, aged parmesan, garlic and crouton. We also had
a special basket of melted cheese bread along with an assortment of whole grain rolls and flat bread.
For our main courses: “Maine Lobster Salad“- Iceberg lettuce, chilled fingerling potatoes with caviar, bell pepper jus and an amazing Cornmeal Crusted Crabcake: Patty pans, baby zuccini, basil, roasted tomato aioli. We shared a special plate of beautifully puffed “Pom Souffles” – Golden Puff Potatos lightly salted and mouthwateringly delicious.
For dessert we shared a chocolate souffle perfectly prepared with liquid chocolate on the inside. Coffee and Tea followed.
An afternoon at the 21club proved once again that elegant dining is a very special experience!
