One small slipup sent Kaylani Paliotta and Lisa Tilley home on Sunday’s episode of “The Amazing Race” (season 19, episode three) – a slipup you may not have noticed if you weren’t paying very close attention.
In the final minutes of Sunday’s episode several teams were shown scrambling to find their cab drivers to settle their bills. Though Amani and Marcus were in last place, they had paid their cab driver before starting the task, giving them the opportunity to reach the pit stop with no worry of elimination. Kaylani and Lisa were one of the teams that had to return to their cab, and unfortunately, it threw them off enough to make them last to reach the pit stop.
As mentioned above, Amani and Marcus were in last place until about 8:58 p.m. The teams were still traveling in Indonesia, and the chips appeared to be stacked against them from the moment they left the previous pit stop. First, they ended up with enemy no. one of any “Amazing Race” season: the confused cab driver who has no idea where he is going. By the time the duo arrived at the Detour four teams were on their way or already starting the Roadblock. During the Detour they made a small error and for who knows what reason decided to switch to the other Detour challenge. They thought the other challenge would be easier, but from a viewer’s perspective, it seemed like the worst move.
Amani and Marcus’ saving grace came in two parts. First, Andy and Tommy (who must’ve had a moment of insanity) gave the duo the answer to the Roadblock; unfortunately, Amani and Marcus were so exhausted neither remembered the answer, just enough of it to appear less confused than the other teams. Second, the other teams had no idea how to do the Roadblock. I’ll admit, the wording of the clue was a little tricky, but that thought didn’t stop me from screaming at my television as members of each team counted up to 263 Buddha statues four or five times. The clue specifically said to count the Buddhas, then demonstrate their four different hand signals to the attendant. It took the teams working together to figure out what they were doing wrong, and their mistakes gave Amani and Marcus the additional time they needed to not be on a plane home that day.
