The United States of America was created to allow its citizens to live free from suppression. The intention was to allow every American the opportunity to strive for success without the fear of having it all taken away against their will. It was created to allow the freedom of expression without the fear of being shot or guillotined. The constitution was created to protect our rights and freedom. The checks and balance of our government was designed to prevent anyone from ever taking ruthless control endangering our free will. Our forefathers were bright honest men with an agenda that involved giving every man an equal opportunity to be successful, but with every good there evil. Freedom besides giving an honest man the opportunity to succeed, it has also opened the doors for the dishonest to thrive in our society. Once these dishonest and deceiving individuals infiltrate the very system that is supposed to protect its citizens, a chain reaction is created that affects the entire country impacting millions of innocent lives. What is one of those chain reactions? The Obesity Epidemic.
The obesity epidemic is more serious today than ever before. Though leaders such as Michelle Obama are making an effort to bring awareness from an early age the problem is evident from a lack of knowledge, low incomes, and a severely under-regulated food industry that is in it solely for the money. Most people know some of the basics of dieting. They know about calories and proteins but in the process of knowing about their existence, they do not understand their importance. With all the scams out there today in regards to supplements and fad diets, people are working backwards endangering themselves because of the deceit and greediness of those who want to live the “American Dream”.
Low incomes also play a major role when it comes to the obesity epidemic. The cost of living keeps rising year after year while wages remain the same. Fruits, vegetables, and lean meats are very expensive. Not being able to afford the foods our body needs to acquire our daily requirements of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats play a major role in making Americans obese and unhealthy. You also have the enormous problem with fast foods that provide processed empty calories that a big percentage of Americans seem to love. Cheap, greasy, processed, and inexpensive make up the perfect recipe for disaster. Due to the expensive nature of natural foods Americans are now relying on dietary supplements which are part of an unregulated industry to lose weight. People are relying on non-proven statements without any scientific evidence to back their claims all to save a few dollars. This causes a chain reaction consisting of unhealthy individuals that in the long run suffer from many diseases costing our healthcare system billions of dollars.
The American Dream was once the idea of being able to pursue your dreams. You had the opportunity to work hard and get ahead so that you could put food on the table, pay the mortgage, own a nice car, and take family vacations once or twice a year without extreme budgeting. Nowadays, that idea is more elusive than ever and instead of striving for the American Dream, people are now fighting to stay alive. People are consuming more junk food than ever and are more sedentary than ever. The reality is that Americans are eating themselves away from the American Dream and into the “American Nightmare”.
