San Francisco is legendary for colorful cocktail traditions and what better way to celebrate than with the 5th Annual SF Cocktail Week festivities. This year more events were added to the line-up including cocktail dinners, seminars and more parties.
SF Cocktail Week kicked off on September 19, 2011 with the Opening Night Party: Around the World with Anchor. Anchor Steam Brewing Company served up spirits and liqueurs, shaken, stirred, and muddled by the San Francisco Bay Area’s top mixologists. Bartenders were easy to spot with hip clothing, cool hats and lots of style. And the cocktails were amazing.
Throughout the week there were choices of parties, seminars and dining events to select from. This year events were offered in the East Bay as well as in San Francisco. Thursday night featured Best of the West, where leading bartenders from Western States and Canada were serving their signature cocktails while a DJ rocked joyful tunes. Guests wagered at the casino tables and enjoyed appetizers while soaking in the tribute to the tipple.
Friday night’s Barbary Coast Bazaar was held at the Old Mint. Attendees and bartenders were dressed in costume and character. It was a festive carnival atmosphere with snake charmers, tarot card readers, charlatans and carnival games providing lively entertainment while ensconced in the historic, mysterious vault rooms. At one end of the historic building a band performed while people checked out the many human curiosities on display that evening.
The cocktail was king at all of the events during SF Cocktail Week. San Francisco has been a cocktail town since Gold Rush days. At that time there were bars and saloons on almost every street. Irish Coffee was invented here at the Buena Vista Café; Trader Vic popularized the Mai Tai; and the Martini is rumored to have been invented in the Bay Area.
If you missed this year’s events, be sure to buy tickets early next year since many of the events sell out. To celebrate another successful SF Cocktail Week, order a cocktail at your local bar.
