If you live in the Philadelphia area, you have access to several of the finest hospitals in the country. Each year, U.S. News and World Report publishes a list of the best hospitals in the nation, along with their outstanding specialties. Of the 93 hospitals in our region, which includes Camden, NJ, and Wilmington, DE, 21 institutions made the 2011-2012 list of the best. Here are some of the choices.
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania: Penn’s hospital, or HUP, is ranked first in our area, with top rankings in 14 specialties, including cancer, diabetes, orthopedics, cardiology and gynecology. Located at a very large campus in West Philly, some of its specialties such as orthopedic surgery are housed at a smaller campus, Penn Presbyterian, also in West Philly. HUP is also nationally renowned for its excellence in biomedical research.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital: Located in center city Philadelphia, Jefferson is ranked second in the region, with national ranking for 11 of its specialties. These include cancer, ear, nose and throat, neurology and neurosurgery. Its website provides specific information about its practices. It’s Kimmel Cancer Center is a National Institutes of Health designated Cancer Center that pursues state-of-the-art research in cancer.
Temple University Hospital: Temple Hospital, part of the Temple University Health System, ranks number three in the area. It has 12 specialties considered “high-performing” by the U.S. News ranking, and one listed as nationally ranked, pulmonology. It’s Lung Center specializes in several groundbreaking surgical and medical approaches for disorders that include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema.
Hahnemann University Hospital: Hahnemann is located on North Broad St., near its intersection with Vine. Ranked number 4 in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, it is nationally ranked in cardiothoracic surgery and recognized as excellent in 10 other practices, including urology, nephrology and cancer.
The rest of the top 10: The rest of the top 10 hospitals in the region include some specialty centers, such as Fox Chase Cancer Center and Wills Eye Hospital. In the surrounding suburbs, Christiana Care in Newark, DE, Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA, and Bryn Mawr, Paoli, Abington and Crozer-Chester hospitals also made the top list for 2011-2012.
