In May 2011, Harold Camping proclaimed that the Rapture of the Christian Church would happen on May 21st and that the end of the world would happen on October 21st.
Even though the May 21st prediction failed to come to pass, Camping still proclaims on his website www.judgementday2011.com that “the End of the World will happen on October 21, 2011, whether you think that the prediction is real or not.”
I know that his prediction of the end of the world won’t happen on this coming Friday for two main Biblical reasons. The first of these comes from my study of 2 Thessalonians 2:1-10. In these verses the Apostle Paul tells his readers to not be disturbed by messages that the day of the Lord had already happened because that day won’t come until there is a great falling away from the Christian faith and there is the appearance of the man of lawlessness who will use the power of the devil to work false wonders and deceive many people who don’t follow God’s truths and principles for living.
Although we have seen some people fall away from following the Christian faith, we have not seen the man of lawlessness appear and sit down in a future Temple in Jerusalem and declare himself to be a god as predicted in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4.
Since those things have not happened, then neither the Day of the Lord, the time of God’s Judgement Day, or the end of the world can happen on Friday October 21, 2011!
Another reason why the end of the world won’t happen on Friday is that it has no significant festival day happening then. In my study of Christian theology I have seen how God often does great events either in fulfillment or in conjuction with a Biblical festival day.A great example of this is found in how the great events of Jesus life were done in fulfillment of the Biblical festival days. Because October 21st doesn’t have any of those festivals happening on it, then the end of the world probably won’t happen then.
Ever since Jesus ascended into Heaven, His followers have longed for His return and have studied the prophecies that He made about the events that would happen just before such a glorious event would occur. As modern Christians study those prophecies and relate them to what is happening in the world today, they can see that the time of Jesus’ return is getting shorter. However, they also see that there are a lot of prophecies of times of persecution of Christians that will happen before Jesus comes back to conquer that which is evil on earth.
In order to get us safely through the events described in those prophecies, we need to have a close relationship with God. This involves daily talking to Him in prayer and studying His word to learn His principles for living. We also need to use the power of the Holy Spirit to stay faithful to living by God’s principles in the midst of the enormous spiritual darkness that is found in our modern society.
As Christians do those things, they won’t have to be afraid of the time when Jesus comes back, God brings His judgement to the earth, and the end of the world actually happens.
