When visiting the St. Louis area, we made it a point to visit the Butterfly House and take some pictures of those creatures with fluttering wings of color and delight. The Butterfly House in Missouri is a not-for-profit organization established to increase awareness of the natural habitat in which butterflies thrive, which is a special interest of mine as I travel across the country.
The Butterfly House is part of the Missouri Botanical Garden, a leader in horticultural displays, research and education but it is actually located 1.2 miles north of the I-64/Olive-Clarkson exit, Exit 19B, inside Faust Park.
It is a wonderful place to view as many as 80 butterfly species fluttering among about 150 tropical plant species. In the theater, their movie was fun and educational. I learned something new, that butterflies have to “pump up” their wings after they hatch, before they can fly away.
Consider planting a butterfly garden of your own to support butterfly habitat. Each butterfly has a favorite nectar plant, and needs a specific host plant where it will lay eggs. If you provide the right match of plants for your native butterflies you will make your garden the most popular hangout for colorful fliers. To learn more: Butterfly Gardening Facts
Travel Tip: The Conservatory, where the butterflies fly free, is 85 degrees with 75% humidity. The day we visited, it was about 100 degrees and with the humidity we were dripping in no time. While the heat may sound great in the middle of winter, winter clothing may become very uncomfortable. They recommend that guests dress in layers and short sleeves when visiting.
Hours: The Butterfly House is open 9am to 4pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Please note: last ticket sold one half-hour before closing. (closed on Mondays, except Columbus Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents Day).
