This Friday, September 16, one of the most iconic film franchises of all time finally gets released in a brand new Blu-Ray set. That franchise, of course, would be “Star Wars”.
The rerelease of all six “Star Wars” films has received much attention, both positive and negative. The films will be newly restored for their Blu-Ray release, and fans have the choice to buy just the prequel trilogy (including the newer films “The Phantom Menace”, “Attack of the Clones”, and “Revenge of the Sith”), the original trilogy (including the classics “A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “Return of the Jedi”), or all six movies on the Complete Saga set. The latter will include nine discs, with each movie on its own Blu-Ray disc and over 30 hours of special features.
The Complete Saga collection includes many of the special features one would expect to find on a set like this, including audio commentaries, deleted and alternate scenes, concept art, and cast and crew interviews. But there will also be an extensive series of documentaries, some old and some new, including behind-the-scenes looks at the original films, the special effects used to create some of the saga’s memorable creatures, a tour of the Lucasfilm Archives, and a collection of “Star Wars” spoofs.
It’s no surprise that the series’ creator George Lucas decided to tweak the films yet again, receiving mixed reaction from fans, from his decision to replace the puppet Yoda used in “The Phantom Menace” with a CGI one and having Darth Vader screaming “NOOO!” after killing the Emperor in “Return of the Jedi”. Regardless, people will still be looking to buy the films on Friday if they haven’t already preordered them. Naturally, all of the major retailers will be carrying the collection, but die-hard “Star Wars” fans in St. Louis who feel the need to celebrate can travel to Hastings in Jefferson City or Cape Girardeau Thursday night for a midnight release party.
