Apparently this birther nonsense is contagious. You can catch it by having dinner with Donald Trump who seems to have a fatal case of it. Which Rick Perry did.
We ‘ve never thought much of Rick Perry’s brain. But we never thought he was crazy. Until now.
Frankly, the whole dispute over President Obama’s birthplace seems really stupid…not to say crazy…for most rational people. And the release of his birth certificate last spring settled matter even for most irrational people. For those for whom this was an actual “issue”…well, most of us thought it was settled long ago.
Except for Donald Trump. And, now, Rick Perry.
One understands that it’s sometimes necessary for the R’s to play to their far right wing. We, after all, are in California where the right is a little more right than in most other places. But when did it become necessary to play to the craziest of the right-wingers, the ones who believe, among other things, that the President was born in Kenya, that, despite his professed Christianity, he’s actually a secret Muslim? Nobody sane actually ever believed these things. One likes to think that even Donald Trump didn’t believe it, that he was simply using it to pump up the publicity stunt that was his “Presidential Campaign”. Only the craziest of the right wing actually believe these things are true.
Once upon a time, we liberals were accused of catering to the Loony Left. You know…people who believe in such things as racial equality, equal pay for equal work, social justice…loony things like that. Now, apparently, conservatives feel the need to play to the Crazy Right…people who believe, for instance, in the birther lie. Apparently Mr. Perry, allegedly a mainstream Presidential candidate, now feels the need to pander to these people.
Why, now, should anyone take this man seriously? Why, in the end, should we take seriously a political party that not only tolerates these wing nuts, but celebrates them? Why should we take seriously those candidates who not only pander to the 27% of their party at the far right…but to the tiny percentage at the far, far right who, quite definitely, are crazy?
Are the candidates pandering to these people crazy themselves? Or are they just stupid? Because the country is watching. The country is judging. And these birthers are dangerous, even to Republicans. They caught out a rising Republican star who lied about his own family. What next?
This country has serious problems and needs serious candidates to help solve them. Unfortunately, the R’s haven’t presented us with any.
