An example of the exemplary horses that are available:
Dam Sire: Pablito
Grand Dam Sire: Kalypso
Lyric is 16.2, an elegant young mare born in 2007, by Landkoenig out of EMC Pure Poetry. Lyric is of beautiful type, correct conformation, and is suitable for hunters, jumpers, or dressage. Her temperament is kind and sensitive, and very sensible.
Her sire, Landkoenig, is the highest rated jumper, standing in the U.S. listed in the 2009 Stallion yearbook with a jumper breed value of 135 and 140 for ability, slightly higher than super producer and 2007 stallion of the year Argentinus. Landkoenig produced, from his first foal crop of about 50 Hanoverians, a licensed Hanoverian stallion and in 2002 broke the record for producing the highest selling jumper ever in the history at the Hanoverian Elite auctions in Germany. Lantinus, a 4 yr old gelding sold for Euro 215,000 also setting the record price for the Hanoverian auction year, something never done by a jumper!
We have seen a glimpse of Lyric’s talent in free jumping, and now that she is older, we are excited about her potential as she begins formal training in February.
An example of the fantastic foals:
Sire: Escudo II
Dam Sire: Kalypso
Grand Dam Sire: Diamont
Lovely elegant young gelding. Beautiful type and movement. He looks bound for the hunter ring, but you never know?the Kalypso dam line is known for producing jumpers, and Escudo II, known for his athleticism, type, and high intelligence is Jumper Breeding Program approved. He is a beautiful horse inside and out. $10,000
And an example of the wonderful broodmares:
Dam Sire: Prinz Gaylord
Grand Dam Sire: Pincio
Djakarta was sired by the legendary dressage sire, Diamont. Her damsire is the Grand Prix showjumper, Prinz Gaylord. Djakarta was bred by Volker and Judy Ehlers, of Glenwood Farms, in California, highly influential and successful importers and breeders of warmbloods in the 70s and 80s. Djakarta is approved for Oldenburg or Hanoverian breeding, so stallions to match Djakarta may be selected from either breed registry to produce a registered foal. Djakarta’s offspring are notable for their calm and intelligent temperaments, and are honest and straightforward to work with. They learn quickly, and make wonderful amateur owner horses.
Djakarta should be matched to a stallion larger than 16hh, unless a smaller horse is desired. She tends to pass on refinement and size from the stallion, and often adds the substance and topline of Diamont. Her offspring are athletic, elegant horses with lovely, floating movement and beautiful heads. They are gentle spirited, very rideable, and eager to please. They have correct jumping style, from Prinz Gaylord’s influence, thus are suitable for dressage or hunter disciplines.
About Winterstar Farms:
Your young horse will grow up with lots of space to exercise at will, and with the emotional benefit of being raised by the herd. We introduce training principles at a pace each horse is comfortable with, until your horse is ready to select its career. The fundamentals of our approach are based upon first building a relationship with your horse, then teaching exercises that build upon one another and are never repetitive or boring for the horse. In time, the horse will choose its discipline, and we ask clients to be open to this process.
How do we let the horse decide? We spend a lot of time building the horse-human relationship, so that we can observe and intuitively sense, as horses do, when the horse is comfortable with the work as directed, or when the horse does not like the work. Our workshops teach this approach. For example, regardless of breeding, some horses love to jump, some don’t. Some are gifted in the classical art of dressage, and love to “dance” – some”dressage horses” would rather jump, and are quite good at it. Some are “speed” horses, and enjoy the challenges of eventing. Some naturally move in a rhythmic gait characteristic of a hunter or equitation horse. If you watch carefully the horse’s reactions to what is asked of it in a training session, you will know and you will sense what is best.
We have developed our raising program around the principles taught at Epona Equestrian Services, LLC. Authenticity, Relationship, using Emotion as Information. We apply these principles in our work with horses – sensing and feeling while acting/interacting with our horses.
Our breeding stock is versatile athletically and of high quality, representing some of the finest bloodlines in the Hanoverian and Holsteiner worlds. Most of our mares can produce horses for any discipline, such as jumping, eventing, hunters or dressage. We believe that if the horse is allowed to “choose” its discipline, that this ability to choose is fundamentally the best way to give the horse its best chance to perform athletically to its fullest potential.
We are also happy to raise your young horse, or help you with a “problem horse”. We strongly encourage adopting horses when you have the means to do so, and will help you evaluate a prospective horse to help you make a good choice.
